Sticky Wickets

It's the jolliest, most effervescent lp of a melancholic, depressive, world-recessive summer. It's an earnest homage to The Village Green Preservation Society. It's one part ELO, one part Beach Boys, one part "Wichita Lineman." It's fin de siecle, bravely observing the twilight of Western civilization with rueful affection on a hot night in the city. And the whole caboodle is about playing cricket.

It's post-post-rock, written in the fondly complacent spirit of pre-punk, past-funk, post-easy-listening in the future-perfect progessive. It's easy as ABC and goes down like Pimms on a sunny afternoon in summertime.

I confess that there's nothing particularly new about what they're doing, but that's the whole charm of it. They're creating all new material but doing it old school. 'Comforting as a dip in a champagne-filled hot tub. Warning: prolonged exposure may cause bacterial infection.
