hey guys... sorry about my late posts, i was away for a week without an internet connection...

anyways, i think The Cure's two weakest albums would be "Wild Mood Swings" and "The Top." *big surprise* these two are half good, half bad; and inconsistant at best.

i know "Wild Mood Swings" was supposed to be all over the place (hence the title), but there are just too many weak songs littered throughout the album. the brilliant ones are "Want," "Jupiter Crash," "Treasure," and "Bare." i also applaud the ones where the band tries many different things with great results; i love the loungy feel of "The 13th," which sounded fresh the very day i bought the single, and still sounds fresh today. play this to a casual music listener and they will never guess it's The Cure. it also helps that it's a superbly written song that's infectiously catchy without the basic pop-song format. "This is a Lie" is also another unexpected song, something The Cure hasn't done before, with sparse arrangements and a string quartet. "Gone!" further explores the infectious jazz-bop of "The Lovecats." now the bad... with "Club America," Robert Smith has done spite better than this; "Strange Attraction" sounds like it tries too hard to be likable (although the story behind it is great), as well as "Mint Car," "Round & Round & Round," and "Return." if the weaker songs were swapped with all those excellent b-sides of the era, like "Adonais," "Home," "A Pink Dream," and "Waiting," WMS would've been an awesome album. i think i'll reburn WMS with those songs for myself, that'll easily put the album way up my preferences.

"The Top," hmm... what can i say about "The Top." it's really inconsistant, with half brilliant songs and half that falls flat. the problem was that Robert Smith is used to having input from the rest of the band. at this point, it was just him, Laurance Tolhurst, and drummer Andy Anderson. many had said that this was basically a solo album (Robert had said so himself), and there are debates whether Lol and Andy really contributed much. also, at this point in Cure history, Robert was way out of his mind for reasons or another, and also had other duties with Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Glove, as well as Tim Pope's (their video director) solo debut. somewhere in "Ten Imaginary Years," he said something about if he had more time and input, "The Top" would've been brilliant, but there was lack of time and he had to race to meet the release date. anyway... some brilliant songs are "Dressing Up," "The Catapillar," "Piggy In the Mirror," and the title track. "Bananafishbones" is just awful.

hmm... i'm sure you've gotten the new album already, but i'll have to say it's the son of "Pornagraphy" and "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me." the anger is not as poetic as on "Pornagraphy," but its there in ample amounts nevertheless. and like KMx3, there's a lot of variations and moods within the songs on the album without sounding inconsistant, something WMS suffers from.

i've heard the "Lost Wishes" songs. i think the tracks weren't all too striking. with the exception of the energetic "The Three Sisters," they're kinda like soft, breezy, instrumental background music. i recall i did like the naive "Off to Sleep" and "The Three Sisters." there were three more "Wish" era instrumentals that "leaked out" to the Cure community, and they were "Olde England," "Heart Attack," and "Slvvy." IMO these are better than some of the tracks on "Lost Wishes." these three instrumentals were much more striking and interesting.

anyway, it's almost past the one week mark with this new album, and i havn't stopped listening to it since. some songs are absolutely amazing, there are a few that i don't like...

I will keep my powder dry with Cure for now........but when remastered versions of earlier albums appear with bonus tracks I will be buying

(as long as they don't do something foolish like charge full price for 20+ year old music)

I know that this will not be popular, but I am disappointed [mildly disappointed...] with the new album. I have listened to it twice and it seems to be lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on yet. I read much about this album before it was released. When I read that Robert Smith had teamed up with Korn's producer, that it was going to be guitar-heavy, and the best thing since "Disintegration," I guess my expectations became unrealistically high. I am glad that I bought it. I have everything The Cure has done except "Connect The Dots." You want to hear a great contemporary "Cure" song get Tweaker's "2 A.M. Wake Up Call." Robert Smith sings a song on the album called "Truth Is..." Awesome song Robert Smith at his best. It may grow on me but "The Cure" is no "Disintegration!" [On first listen it sounded to me like the tracks that didn't make my second favorite Cure Album, "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me."]

Kind of late, sorry, but I was just reading this topic and had to put in my 2 cents in defense of The Top.

Really, it is one of my favorite albums, an odd winner. The only album I can definitively say that I like more is Disintegration. The Top is fantastic and quirky from start to finish. Birdmad Girl is my favorite track followed by The Wailing Wall and Piggy in the Mirror. Many people never get into it but it attracted me from a very young age. Now, 13 years later (since I bought it), I still listen to this album regularly.

Wild Mood Swings is, so far, the Cure's most inconsistant album. While it has some great tracks on it like the 13th, Want, Jupiter Crash, Return, Treasure and Bare, I feel that Strange Attraction and Round & Round & Round are big losers. Two of my least favorite tracks by the Cure. The b-sides had some really great tracks, though, with Adonais and A Pink Dream leading the pack. There is just something about those two tracks that melt my soul. Adonais is powerful, but A Pink Dream lifts me up higher and higher. Just when you think you've reached the peak it gets better.

I do like Wish and its b-sides immensely. Bloodflowers I am fond of.

There's a b-side from Bloodflowers that was only ever released as a 96kbps mp3 when you bought the album from a certain website (whose name escapes me).

The song is called "Spilt Milk" and I find it quite cathartic and beautiful.

It has sort of the same vibe to it as A Pink Dream.

Seek it out.

Hey Cure-a-holics!
When are they releasing remastered early albums with bonus tracks? I recall Bong saying that when Join The Dots set was released they would later release albums with bonus tracks........any news yet?

I have been patiently keeping my powder dry..........

Re: bloodflowers b-sides. I shall have to look for that in the usual channels. Thanks for the tip.

Re: reprinting Cure CD's. All The Cure CD's are supposedly going to be reprinted with an extra CD of bonus tracks. I read on pitchforkmedia that they are going to do the first 4 in one go with the rest to follow. I don't think that they have been released yet, but I am looking forward to it. I actually don't own Japanese Whispers on CD anyway (of course, that won't be released yet) and my copy of Pornography skips on two tracks. Good excuse to repurchase if you ask me!

i got to this discussion a little late, i guess, but i really liked the new album. there isn't much that the Cure have done that i don't like, however. i love WMS. Robert Smith's vocal work on Tweaker's new album is very good, as well.

hey DA, looks like you're gonna have to be a bit more patient... Rhino Records gave a release of August 17, 2004 many months ago, and even gave the first four releases catalog numbers. but for some reason or another, it's been pushed back yet again; this will be the fourth time IIRC, and this time no release date. and so far still no tracklistings on the bonus stuff.

oh well...

Cure freaks waited a gazillion years for the b-sides comp, i guess we could wait just a little bit more for the remasters.

besides, i've been listening to a lot of Joy Division / New Order lately...
