So I've shopped around, and I'm slowly building up a new system to replace my HD555. I'm trying to get better detail (but still w/ forgiveness), a more engaging sound, and a realistic, 3D soundstage; I'll be pumping classic rock (no metal), jazz, and classical through it. Here's what I've come up with:

Silverstone EB01 DAC-$105
Vintage Marantz receiver-$50-$200
Beyer DT990-$229
Total: $385-535

Will this setup give me what I'm looking for? What can I change to make my system better?

I've just found what could be a great deal on the DT990's...

Does the online store look legit?

Edit: This site is selling the DT990 Pro variant; I did not know until seeing the post below. Still cheap, though...

I'm not sure how much I can help about the complete system, but just wanted to warn you that those are the DT990 Pro's, which are the pre-2005 version. The average price for those should be around $150-170.

I have the 2005 DT990's and they're working out great for me--handle everything I throw at them and sound great doing it. Right now I'm working with a 20 year old receiver with a crummy headphone out as my amp. If they only can get better from here, I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with them for a long time.

Disclaimer: I'm fairly new to hifi and these are my third pair of headphones, so I can't offer the depth of experience some other members have. So take my recommendations with a pinch of salt.

Great, because the DT990's my 2nd pair, if you only count "great". Thanks for the clarifier.

Alright, last bump, I promise. Can someone clarify the SQ difference between the DT990 Pro (the link, usually $120-150) and the new 2005 DT990 ($265, $400)? Is it drastic enough to justify the price difference?

other than the Pro being meant for studio use...the Pro is supposed to have more recessed midrange as compared to the 05 edition (according to other forumers here)

other differences i have no idea.

EDIT: personally, id say the extra cost would be worth it
