Headroom states that the 497s are ONE of the best sub-$100 headphones.. there's a bit of a difference there..

I haven't listened to those before ( or a number of things)
I feel that the ATH-A500s are the most awesome 'phones in that category, they sound great while offering some isolation (during lan parties) and have good positioning. I felt that they had a very smooth response although slightly hightened bass reproduction. A rather warm sound if I do say so. Violins on the MDR-D66SL sounded harsh compared the the A500s.
