What do you mean by 'excellent sounding' ?

Do you mean the best recordings or the best music itself?
(and do you mean soundtrack or best original score?)

Unfortunately, the recording quality of the orignal Star Wars movies is rather poor (but the music is so beautiful it would even
shine played through a phone line)

I think a rather impressive recording is the Rhino release of
Ben-Hur.
Considering that the movie is 42 years old they did a fabulous job!

I quite like the "Blade Runner" (Vangelis) soundtrack and some of Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western work - not forgetting "The Mission".

Two other soundtracks that I really enjoy are more 'homages' rather than official soundtracks:

Lustmord/Robert Rich "Stalker" which is a homage to a movie of the same name by Andrei Tarkovsky and which I have yet to see. This one is a very dense slab of ambience - great for late night listening

The Bug "Tapping the Conversation" a homage to "The Conversation" which starred Gene Hackman and was directed by Franic Ford Coppola. Like the movie, this 'soundtrack' exudes menace and paranoia - thoroughly enjoyable!

SALUT!

Do you mean soundtrack or score? (Soundtracks are usually collections of songs by various artists, scores are usually orchestral/instrumental work.)

Well, not in this thread.

GLADIATOR is an excellent score IMO, mariowar.

(there - now it's covered)
