I personally would not walk around with few thousand dollars on my head though.

HD280s work great without an amp. Portable... maybe. They can store flat for traveling in a laptop bag or something similar, so that's what I use.

They sound damn good, not sure if they are the best *portable*, as they seem to lack somewhat important for portables isolation. Other than that I X too.

I was under the impression from reading other threads that the ESW9's did not isolate all that well. I can't comment as I have not a listen to a pair.

The best portable headphones I have heard are Sennheiser HD25-1 s. Built like a tank, isolate very well and sound great.

As for Edition 9's, I can't imagine myself using $1000 plus headphones portably! I would be a bit reluctant to stuff them into a briefcase or backpack.

The ESW-9's don't isolate very well at all but they don't leak very much so you can use them in libraries and other quiet environments. Sound is great when amped. If you don't amp it, you're going to experience weak mid's and slightly bloated bass.

On a personal note, I don't like how the earcups stick out compared to ES-7's.
