Lets face it. We spend hours listening to songs and tweaking our sytems so that the sound is just to our liking. But sometimes we can forget the message that the artist is trying to convey through the lyrics.

So the question is quite simple: What are the best lyrics (not a personal FOTM) that you have ever heard?

The lyrics to Tool's "Stinkfist" are thought provoking. You can look at it in various ways and its very distrubing when you relate them to real life.

Quote:

Something has to change.
Un-deniable dilemma.
Boredom's not a burden
Anyone should bear.

Constant over stimu-lation numbs me
and I wouldn't have
It any other way.

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To feel, to breathe, to know I'm alive.

Finger deep within the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Relax, turn around and take my hand.

I can help you change
Tired moments into pleasure.
Say the word and we'll be
Well upon our way.

Blend and balance
Pain and comfort
Deep within you
Till you will not have me any other way.

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To feel, to breathe, to know I'm alive.

Knuckle deep inside the borderline.
This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to.
Relax. Slip away.

Something kinda sad about
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?

I'll keep digging till
I feel something.

Elbow deep inside the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Shoulder deep within the borderline.
Relax. Turn around and take my hand.

Quote:

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

I can't help but to be captivated by the imagery in this song, especially this part. Bob Dylan is a true poet.

This is far more impactful in the context of the remainder of the album, but..

Quote:

You claim I don't know you, but I know you well
I read in those ash eyes we've been through hell
I've walked with the weakest just to feel strong
You've given your body just to belong

Let's burn together
Let's burn together

This pain will never end
These scars will never mend

I taste your sorrow and you taste my pain
Drawn to each other for every stain
Licking the layers of soot from your skin
Your tears work my crust to let yourself in

Touching you harder
Touching you harder now

As we walk through the ashes
I whisper your name
A taste of pain to cling to
As we walk through the ashes
You whisper my name
Who's the one with the sickest mind...
now?

This pain will never end
Our scars will never mend
Cleansing sweat
We are just using each other
Too depraved to stay alive
But too young to die
And we hurt
Thus we hurt

Scrubbing it harder
Too late to back out now
Scrubbing it even harder
As these two broken barren desolate disordered words collide

As we walk through the ashes
I whisper your name
A taste of pain to cling to
As we walk through the ashes
You whisper my name
Who's the one with the sickest mind...
now?

This pain will never end
These scars will never mend
Damn this dirty bed
Damn this dirty head

Warren Zevon: Werewolves of London
Quote:

I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand,
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain.
He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's,
Going to get a big dish of beef chow mein.

Or, Jonathan Coulton: Skullcrusher Mountain (a supervillian love song)
Quote:

I’m so into you
But I’m way too smart for you
Even my henchmen think I’m crazy
I’m not surprised that you agree
If you could find some way to be
A little bit less afraid of me
You’d see the voices that control me from inside my head
Say I shouldn’t kill you yet

Who needs serious lyrics?

here are some good lyrics from one of the best songs ever.

Nas - NY State Of Mind

Verse One:

rappers are monkey flippin'

with the funky rhythm i bekickin'

musicians and flippin' composition if pain

i'm like scarface sniffin' cocaine

holdin' an m-16, see with the pen i'm extreme

now bullet holes left in my peepholes,

i'm suited up in street clothes

hand me a nine and i'll defeat foes

y'all know my stylo with or without the airplay

i keep some e & j sit up, bent up in the stairway

or even on the corner bettin' grants with the c-low champs

laughin' at the basheads tryin' to sell some broken amps

g, pass, get off quick, forever niggas talk ****

reminiscing about the last time the task force flipped

niggas be runnin' through the block shootin'

time to start the revolution, catch a body head for houston

once they caught us off-guard the mac 10 was in the grass

and i ran like a cheetah with thoughts of an assassin

pick the mac up told the brothers, "back up" the mac spit

lead was hittin' niggas one ran, i made him back-flip

heard a few chicks scream my arm shook, couldn't look

gave another squeeze heard it click yo, my **** is stuck

try to **** it it wouldn't shoot now i'm in danger

finally pulled it back and saw three bullets caught up in the chamber

so now i'm jetting through the building lobby

and it was filled with children probably couldn't see as high as i be

(so whatcha sayin'?) it's like the game ain't the same

got younger niggas pullin' the triggers bringing fame to their name

and claim some corners, crews without gunsare goners

in broad daylight stick-up kids they run up on us

forty-fives and gauges macs and facts

saying niggas are catchin' back to backsnatchin' the cracks

and black there was a snitchon the block gettin' niggas knocked

so hold your stash until the coke price drop

i know this crackhead who said she gotta smoke some nice rock

and if it's good she'll bring ya customers in measuring pots, but yo

you gotta slide on a vacation inside information

keeps large niggas erasing and their wives basin'

it drops deep as it does in my breath

i never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death

beyond the walls of intelligence life is defined

i think of crime when i'm in a new york state of mind

Verse Two:

be havin' dreams that i'm a gangster drinkin' moets, holdin' tecs

makin' sure the cash come correct then i stepped

investments in stocks sewin' up the blocks to sell rocks

winning gun fights with mega cops,

but just a nigga

walking with his finger on the trigger

make enough figures

until my pockets get bigger

i ain't the type of brother made for you to start testin'

giveme a smith & wesson i'll have niggas undressin'

thinkin' of cash flow, buddah and shelter,

whenever frustrated i'm a hi-jack delta

in the pj's my blend tape plays

bullets are strays young bitches is grazed

eahc block is like a maze full of black rats trapped

plus the island is packed

from what i hear in all the stories

when my peoples come back, black

i'm livin where the nights are jet-black,

i just max and dream i can sit back

and lamp like capone with drug scripts sewn

or the legal luxury life, rings flooded with stones, homes

i got so many rhymes i don't think i'm too sane

life is parallel to hell but i must maintain

and be prosperous though we live dangerous

cops could just harass me, blamin' us we're held like hostages

it's only right that i was born to use mics

and the stuff that i write is even tougher than dikes

i'm takin' rappers to a new plateau through rap slow

my rhymin' is a vitamin hell without a capsule

the smooth criminal on beat brakes

never put me in your box if the **** eats tapes

the city never sleeps full of villians and creeps

that's where i learned to do my hustle had to scuffle with freaks

i'm an addict for sneakers twenties of buddah and bitches with beepers

in the streets i can greet ya, about blunts i can teach ya

inhale deep like the words of my breath

i never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death

i lay puzzle as i backtrack to earlier times

nothing's equivalent to the New York state of mind

Remember when you were young
you shone like the sun
Shine on You crazy Diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
You were caught in the crossfire
of childhood and stardom
blown on the steel breeze
come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you marytr
and shine

You reached for the secret too soon
you cried for the moon
Shine on You crazy Diamond
Threatened by shadows at night
And exposed to the light
Shine on You crazy Diamond
Well you wore out your welcome
with random precision
blown on the steel breeze
Come on you raver, you seer of visions
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner
and shine

Nobody knows where you are
How near or how far
Shine on You crazy Diamond
Pile on many more layers
and I'll be joining you there
Shine on You crazy Diamond
And we'll bask in the shadow
of yesterday's triumph
sail on the steel breeze
come on you poor child, you winner and loser
come on you miner for truth and delusion
and shine

While probably not my favorite, you can't deny the lyrics from Lateralus, especially this part...
Quote:

I embrace my desire to
I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I move myeslf between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out. I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
Spiral out. Keep going.
