The AKG K7XX Massdrop First Edition Thread

That's coincides with my own observation on K7XX sound.
I found them more suited for pop and EDM music than for classical. The sound is just hasn't enough warmth to truthfully describe deep warm notes that double bass and viola da gamba are capable of. The female soprano voices in baroque operas sound somewhat distant and cold with the soundstage moving farther into the scene. Not that they sound bad or shrill... just a bit different from what I perceive as a natural and organic presentation of the classical music.
Though, K7XX sounds amazing with some genres particularly with pop, rock and EDM.

I don't have my K7XX yet but listen to a lot of acoustic jazz and classical on my K712 while I wait for them to arrive.  Considering the consensus seems to suggest the two models are more alike than different I'll post links to a few example tracks of songs I think sound superb (forgiving for youtube sound quality):

"Haitian Fight Song" - Mingus Big Band:

"Re-Jigue" - Alan Parsons:

"Albeniz - Suite Espanola No.1 Opus 47" - New Philharmonia Orchestra:

"Requiem" - John Rutter:

"The Flower Duet (from Lakmé)" - Léo Delibes:

"Der Leiermann from Winterreise" - Franz Schubert (Yoram Chaiter, bass):

EDM, pop, rock?  Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Shpongle, Kroke, The Who, and Underworld are a few of my favorite bands.  I think the K712 handles *everything* quite well and I'm honestly hoping to be disappointed by the K7XX, due to it's similar sound.

I'm really liking the K7XX with metal, which surprised me. I find myself reaching for them over my Alessandro MS2 and AD2000x, even though those are probably superior metal phones... there's something I enjoy about the K7XX.

The bass on them goes down, down, down. It's amazing. I am grabbing them all the time I listen to music now, they are so good.

These look like a great deal for a pair of HP's that are quite highly regarded in the community with the exception of a slightly different "branding". I'm glad that AKG went this route so that buyers of the original K702 won't feel that they have been cheated on or feel that their product is now highly devalued. From an economic point of view AKG/Harman has done it right!

I agree. Amazing value. However, it is a hybrid tube amplifier. I think garage1217 may have an otl tube in their lineup though.

Hmmm...  I'm not sure they do but...   I jumped on the stat that that model has a single ended OTL class A output stage.  I'm not sure if a bufferless non-hybrid makes sense anymore... but to each his own!

the bass is amazing in these
it extends so flawlessly just makes it a joy to listen to
definitely an interesting headphone
i compared recently to shure 1440, and i can not pick one as better.
they are definitely different sounding phones, but this bass is definitely done much better on k7xx, while mids are definitely better on 1440

Just noticed horizon is their otl for higher impedance. Do you guys think that might be a better match for the k7xx? It sounds great on 70 ohm output resistance on my starlight, doesn't seem too affected by the higher output resistance.

I didn't realize the sunrise was an otl. Might have to save up and get it.

Sunrise is a tube pre-amped solid state output device. Read Hybrid! OTL it is, but that is because it is solid state. No need for an output transformer!
Yes it IS class A... and gets pretty darn warm on the heat sinks!

I have two of the Sunrise III models. I really like them... Mullard 12AU7s

From the Garage1217 web page:
"Project Sunrise III... Where to start with this tried and tested beauty? Project Sunrise was our first amplifier design. She has sold all over the globe and has been reviewed, tested and loved for years. She was the first in a series of tweak-able hybrids which simply give so much more vs. the competition."
