Cant really disagree with the top picks, dems the classics. I wouldve like to have seen some Tom Waits there though. Closing Time, preferably

I love these lists when I can find an album I've never heard keeping such good company. I've never heard "LOVE – Forever Changes" so I'll be all over that today! THanks!

I agree, for the same reason I wrote about above. If some make a top 100 list and you've heard and like 75% of the list, then there's a cornucopia of titles to explore that might please you!

Wow, you must really like Led Zeppelin's Mothership and Springsteen's Nebraska: they're both on there twice!

I've left in my quotation some of the selections that struck me as especially interesting: Jesus Christ Superstar (in my case, the film score not the original album) would, I'm afraid, rate in my personal top 100 as well, and it's nice to see someone sticking up for ELO, Supertramp and Jethro Tull, all of them underrated.

But why Extraordinary Machine? Surely in every sense Tidal is a better album?

if 'most important' is one of your criteria - i would put radiohead's Kid A before putting down OK computer'

-bjork's homogenice made her the biggest name in european electronica for a decade

-ya the smiths are pretty important too

nice to see bob dylan up there - blood on the tracks was his 'greatest' album - maybe not as influencial, but fully realized more than his others

IMHO, this list is no good. There are a lot of albums that are hardly better than average rock/pop album of 60s.
* all beatles out of top 100. They belong in top 1000.
* jimi hendrix I'd put down somewhere below top 100, not sure where exactly. He's just not in my taste, same goes for Nirvana, steview wonder, elvis presley, U2, john lennon, cream, elton john, fleetwood mac, queen, kraftwerk, love, radiohead, ike & tina turner, lynyrd skynyrd, - all of these don't really belong in top 100, some of them may be in top 200 or top 300.

Special note for the eagles: they are not terrible but they don't belong in top 1000.

The ones I agree on: Dylan, Pet Sounds (although I'd put them at around 80s-90s), Led Zeppelin, Velvet Underground, The Who, Rolling Stones - Let it bleed (around 80s-90s, and maybe one of their other albums in the same neighbourhood, not sure which); I agree with Michael Jackson - Thriller, but I'd put it down to around 60s-70s; The rise and fall of ziggy stardust is out of top 100 but his album with Space Oddity (don't remember which one it is), should be around #50s; I agree with putting the Bee Gees around #50; I agree with placement of The allman brothers band, I would put King Crimson much higher, ~10-20, and add 'Red' at ~60, I agree with placement of Simon & Garfunkel, I agree with placement of the Police but I'd add Outlandos d'Amour and Reggatta De Blanc, I agree with placement of Janis Joplin, I haven't heard that one but I would add Cheap Thrills near the end of the 100.; I agree with placement of Steely Dan, but I would add more albums and put him closer to the top, around #20-30., I agree with placement of Zappa album but I would have it certainly above Sgt. Pepper .

One special case is Pink Floyd. Since I'm a fanboy, take this with a slight grain of salt, but: DSOTM should be out of top 100, it's not a very good album. Only one really good song, and the whole thing is too sleek and polished. Music should not be done like that. PF albums at the top 10 & 20: Piper at the Gates of Dawn (definitely in top 3), Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, More, Obscured by Clouds, Meddle, Animals, Wish you Were Here. ALL of these are FAR better than The Wall or especially DSOTM. The three Syd Barrett albums should be somewhere around #80-90. Waters solo albums and after-waters Floydsters are nowhere near top 100, naturally.

The Kinks are very good. It's odd that you don't have them in the list, they seem to be in your taste and there's really nothing objectionable about them, and yet they can't be said to be boring, either. I'd at least have Arthur and Village Green somewhere at the top 20, and maybe a couple other albums in top 80.

Where's the Genesis!!? You need Nursery Cryme somewhere and Foxtrot, maybe in top 50? Top 40? Trick of a tail belongs in top 80. As others said, Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms should be in there somewhere, how about top 80? Alan Parsons - Tales of mystery and imagination belongs in top 90, in fact, Parsons sucks big time but that album wasn't bad at all. It's odd how quickly he lost his music touch. Kate Bush - The whole story and the The Sensual World belongs in top 70.

No Doors - Strange Days?? It's easily better than complete Beatles catalogue! Come on. I'd leave their self-titled where it is and put Strange Days right up in the top 20 there. Their later albums are decent, but not quite top 100.

I would definitely add at least one Pet Shop Boys album in top 90, maybe even two - Very and Bilingual.

I'd put 3-4 early Gentle Giant albums in top 40. Depeche Mode - Violator in top 90.

Simon & Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme - did you leave it out because it's hard to type. Well there I typed it for you . Top 30.

A few Saint Etienne albums belong to top 40 - 'So Tough' and 'Foxbase Alpha', at the very least, maybe more. I should listen to them more.

Bjork Debut, Gling-Glo: top 40 both. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow, top 50.

Ah, looks like you're not much of a Jethro Tull fan. I would add Aqualung, This Was, Songs from the Wood, thick as a brick, Stand Up - in top 40.

Yes - Fragile should be in top 40 as well.

CCR - The cosmo's factory should be a bit lower, in top 90, though.

Cranberries - first album should be in top 60s. Supertramp - crime of the century and crisis, what crisis? should be right next to it.

I would add some ELP there, definitely, but I only have their 'The best of...' right now, so not sure which albums. 2-3 albums at least.

Brian Eno - before and after science should be let's say not lower than in top 60s.

If I did not mention some of the listed Bands, that's cause I haven't heard them or heard too little to judge.

Sorry I knew I'd screw up somewhere. Replaced 2nd Mothership with The Essential Leonard Cohen (which I forgot the first time around).

Not one Beatles album on the top 100??? Some of their albums are my all time favorites across all genres, let alone limiting to Pop/Rock/Soul.

DSOTM not a good album??? are you crazy?

ZepFloyd: DSoTM is ok but not top 100. It's too polished. Listen it side by side with More and Obscured and weep for how much better Floydsters might have been if they didn't go with an overproduced, polished sound. Yep and that affects WYWH and even Animals. And of course the Wall. Basically DSOTM was the beginning of the end. Oh, and Piper rules . I have a theory that only Sid was *really* talented and Waters was so shell-shocked by his influence that he kept making good music for a good few years after Syd went nutty. Think about this for a second, could a really talented dude make Radio KAOS and Pro's and Con's? No way!

Jun 22, 2008 at 9:59 AM Post #43 of 72
I feel that "Meddle" and DSOTM were really the beginning for Pink Floyd. DSOTM just took their music to a more professional level. Polished, yes, definitely. But like the road of the audiophile many here follow ... I think Floyd likewise had matured to the point to where they wanted their music to also "sound good." No crime in that. I think Syd Barretts '60s psychedelic excursions were self-indulgent and unoriginal sounding. They sounded like every other psychedelic band at the time. All that playful, nursery-rhyme crap to the tooting of an off-key brass section. Who didn't sound like that?

Jun 22, 2008 at 7:17 PM Post #44 of 72
chadbang: I don't know anyone else who did songs like Matilda Mother or Flaming or Gnome.. or almost any other on Piper except for the Waters number. Captain Beefheart? He's good I think (I haven't heard much) but not the same kind of music at all. Zappa? Also a lot of experimental odd-sounding music but nothing close to Piper. King Crimson? Again some experimental music, nursery chimes-like sometimes, but a completely different sound. I don't really know who you are talking about.

Meddle is a good album, but DSoTM is too calculated and " safe ". You can almost see them standing there after it was done and telling each other, there is no way this is not going to do well. It's like a bricket of frozen veal in a store - what's not to like? DSoTM is like Queen albums - well done, professional, you can put it on the radio and nobody will complain. But is it music? Right .

Piper sounds quite good to me. I don't have to force myself to listen to it because it's experimental or savant. Matilda Mother or Scarecrow are more musical to my ear than anything on DSoTM. It does sound gentler and softer with tube amp and sony scph-1001, though, on many setups I think it will sound too harsh at times, I would love to hear it in mono on a good vinyl setup, though. From what I heard mono version is better by far.

It's a nice list...but I'm biased. I already own all but 2 in your top 25.
