Here's my story on my search for better music.
I started off looking for some alternatives to Beats. I know I loved bass so I bought Beyerdynamic DT770s. I was still very affected by the marketing that is Monster///Dre and wanted them still. I started to pursue better quality sound before I even realized it. I bought new earphones and even the Cowon J3. J3's equalizer is too much fun to play with. I ran into a friend that is also apparently a headphone enthusiast and I was actually excited to get to try his headphones. I get excited to hear new headphones now. Each one seems to have their own personality if that makes sense. The moment I knew I changed was when a different friend actually said, "these sound better than Beats." It was a moment of validity of what I've been trying to reach. I can proudly say that Beats are ****. I've somehow sunk $500+ in one summer over audio equipment which is very bittersweet. Still trying to discern the sound quality difference between mp3 and flac.
