Testing Audiophile Claims and Myths : The Original Compilation

Another listening test that is ongoing is comparing Hi Res audio with CD quality being run by Mark Waldrep of AIX.

I know this test has been done to death over the past 30 years with no clear evidence that a difference can be heard in controlled tests but apart from the statistical results so far showing listeners cannot tell the difference, what is great about this test is the honesty.

Mark Waldrep's business is producing and selling hi res music so he would have a vested interest in demonstrating the superiority of hi res. Yet he openly admits that his tests with the public show that there is no difference in sound quality that is perceptible by human beings.

The other good aspect of this test is that it addresses the main criticism usually levelled at CD v Hi Res tests, ie that the material used usually is not hi res because it comes from a standard res source (ie an analog recording or a CD master). With Waldrep's tests files, they are all his own productions and therefore actual 24/96 recordings, not merely hi res containers.
