I'm using diyeden svdac05. I read many good reviews about 0404 usb, and I'm curious is it really good enough to compare with much higher price dac.
What is your opinion?

My opinion is that you really have to trust your own ears when it comes to the DAC. It's possible that DACs have a signature, but so does the amp and the cans. Some people also think that the cables have a signature. Comparing my arcam player and my 0404 usb in an A/B test, I could hear no difference whatsoever.

Listen, and trust no one else, when it comes to the small details. It seems that people differ a lot in what they hear.

I find my Marantz SA8001 is warmer and similar in detail to the 0404 USB, so I tend to prefer the SA8001....but on a 100 point scale, the difference is like a 2 or a 3 on most material to which I listen, which tends to be well-recorded acoustical/orchestral.

On the other hand, the 0404 USB makes badly recorded/mastered, edgy rock sound exactly that way. The warmer character of the SA8001 provides some compensation for that, it seems.
