Technics SL-BD26 Turntable?

Does anybody know anything about this turntable? I emailed someone on craigslist who is giving it away. It needs a replacement needle. How much would that cost me?
Any information is appreciated.

My dad's going to pick it up later this week. He also has a new Audio Technica cartridge with a needle that I can use.
My first turntable! I'm pretty excited I must say. He told me it's in great condition, just a bit dusty.

The model number seems unfamiliar, but it's probably some slight variation of the SL-BD20/22. Those are half decent entry level belt-drive models - good enough for Joe Average, but not really good enough for someone with audiophile ambitions, even with a better cartridge. Cartridge type will be T4P/P-Mount, btw.

Right now, I'm 15 years old, so this will be fine for me for a while. I don't really plan on bringing my vinyl to college, but who knows. It depends on how much room I have. Once I move into a apartment/house of my own, I would probably bring all of it with me. That's when i'll upgrade my turntable.

If indeed it's a variation of the SL-BD20/22, then you will need an phono pre-amp.

It's an old turntable. Not sure if it can be considered vintage. And yes, I will need a phono stage. I've been working on that. Right now, my old HK preamp is having issues with one channel not working, but I'm hoping to sort that out and use it with this.

Grado has some nice inexpensive P-mount cartridges. If you haven't used your TTVJ coupon yet, you can get the Grado Black for $30. Not bad at all.

I don't know if you're interested in one, but all of the older receivers (70s-80s) have them, and some are quite good. Not only that, but many have decent headphone amps and AM/FM tuners built in, too. Take a look here:

You'll probably find a good one under $20 on Craigslist if you look.

U_E: Not sure, whether a Grado would be such a good recommendation - iirc, the Grados tend to pick up hum on that kind of Technics tables.

lini- maybe so. I've never used a Technics table. However, my Planar 3 is ungrounded and I'm getting good results with a Grado Gold.

Good question - but for the lack of personal experience with the problem, I can't provide an answer. Maybe you can ask Joelongwood - iirc, he also got the hum with an SL-BD20 and a Grado Black.

Alright, my dad picked it up for me today, and it works fine with the Audio Technica cartridge. The HK phono preamp we have is having problems with the left input channels however, so we're going over to the local stereo shop to see what can be done about it.
