i dont know exactly what the problem is called but, at any speed I can see the strobe dots rock back and forth while she's spinning and I swear it is resulting in audible speed fluctuations... is this normal to rock back and forth a little.

I can definitely hear it in certain notes in sounds where is sounds like a guitar hits the wammy bar slightly.

the total sway back and forth of the dot is like .030" and is a constant sway and visually noticeable obviously but i can only hear it on a couple isolated notes and steady cymbal hits. maybe i just have some warped vinyl...

Hmm. I don't know.
I suggest you call Kevin Barrett at KABUSA.com . The dude knows his stuff about the 1200, and he's very personable.

Are you sure you can not adjust the speed and make the dots stay in position? IIRC that TT has a pitch control for the speed, if there is no way of controling it, definitelly it has a problem on the quartz locking speed circuit...

I have a similar amount of sway on the outer dots. I got worried and crunched some speed tolerance numbers on some test records I have. HFNRR showed a pretty serious amount of 33rpm-related wow (0.7% amplitude) - which could either be caused by an off-center record or by defects in the drive mechanism. But then I looked at a CBS test record I have, which showed no such wow (there was stuff at other frequencies, likely from the tape or from the cutting lathe, but not at 33rpm).

So I'd say talk to Kevin, but otherwise, ignore it unless you can get the speed tested.

Don't stare at the dots, take the mat off the plater turn it on, if you can see visible fluctuation in the platter rotation you have gotten a bad platter which does happen, this is one of the things Kevin at KAB looks for before he ships a table.
