Teac UD-701N

I have not heard the Teac UD-701N, but if you do not need the analog inputs or extra toslink/coaxial inputs, then the Matrix Element i2 will work just as well for a cheaper price:

Here is a spec review and full review on the older matrix element i from last year by someone that I have actually seen at a CamJam once in SoCal years back:

I haven’t tried any of the new streamers from Matrix Audio but I have both the X-Sabre Pro MQA and TEAC UD-701n. I have extensively compared the two. The biggest difference is that no matter which setting I have on the TEAC, it never reaches to the point where I hear sibilance. It flirts with it but never sound harsh where as MA X-Sabre can sounds sibilant often. So I would say if you have an extremely good upstream source, MA X-Sabre is a better DAC because it is brutally honest. Whereas TEAC doesn’t require a very highly optimised source and can sound good with an iPad as a source as well.

To give some background, the source is a custom fanless PC with AudioLinux OS. I use Roon as library manager and DSP whereas playback duties are with HQPlayer.

Chain1:
AudioLinux (music server) > MA element H (Audio card) > MA X-Spdif 2 (DDC) > MA X-Sabre Pro MQA

Chain2:
AudioLinux (music server) > MA element H (Audio card) > TEAC UD701n
