Tanchjim in ear monitors Impressions Thread

Been playing around making an EQ preset for the Tanchjim Zero. The goal was to improve the low end, fix a little bit of mud in the lower mid-range, and add a tiny bit more upper treble > 10KHz.

If anyone has a pair and wants to give it a go, you can save the following as a .txt and import into EqualizerAPO:

FilterCurve:f0="10" f1="20" f2="30" f3="40" f4="50" f5="60" f6="70" f7="80" f8="90" f9="100" f10="200" f11="300" f12="400" f13="500" f14="600" f15="700" f16="800" f17="900" f18="1000" f19="1500" f20="2000" f21="2500" f22="3000" f23="3500" f24="4000" f25="4500" f26="5000" f27="5500" f28="6000" f29="6500" f30="7000" f31="7500" f32="8000" f33="8500" f34="9000" f35="9500" f36="10000" f37="11000" f38="12000" f39="13000" f40="14000" f41="15000" f42="16000" f43="17000" f44="18000" f45="19000" f46="20000" FilterLength="8191" InterpolateLin="0" InterpolationMethod="B-spline" v0="8.90254532450875" v1="7.39143566138138" v2="6.42666301200896" v3="5.93864457113629" v4="5.74199124697555" v5="5.72930691485222" v6="5.84502557062965" v7="6.05088486161357" v8="6.29113869440234" v9="6.43958920021867" v10="-3.68805790467014" v11="-2.98917186855777" v12="-2.77810700677625" v13="-2.71402524706118" v14="-2.25954705214794" v15="-1.49049233516332" v16="-0.660313456833103" v17="0.161647334105822" v18="0.976794243306816" v19="2.3003608097156" v20="1.00350131810695" v21="0.506312676179493" v22="0.308771266570254" v23="0.21665883773128" v24="0.170916556738065" v25="0.150219556216666" v26="0.145885188589034" v27="0.154270205624976" v28="0.174034971309964" v29="0.204992261398767" v30="0.247531572686548" v31="0.302261369552046" v32="0.369730192320458" v33="0.450175574809821" v34="0.543294943160859" v35="0.648061059957883" v36="0.762620609390501" v37="1.00984217933342" v38="1.257798853236" v39="1.47957053193094" v40="1.65801728586171" v41="1.78889479989157" v42="1.87755468106461" v43="1.93357775168149" v44="1.96674308465811" v45="1.98509948056693" v46="1.99449133697005"

Initially I was just trying to EQ the low end roughly to Harman but during that process I ended up with this slightly odd looking almost HD820-esque bass shelf, and comparing the two I like how this one sounds better so I kept it.

Songs I used for testing the EQ:

Edit: I've since improved a little upon the EQ to give it a bit better soundstage. The Tanchjim Zero already has quite nice soundstage but to my ears (YMMV of course) with this EQ it widens it even more, to the point it's seemingly roughly as large as the soundstage from my K702 - some songs smaller, some bigger (which is wild considering how big that is):

Improved version:

Code:
FilterCurve:f0="10" f1="20" f2="30" f3="40" f4="50" f5="60" f6="70" f7="80" f8="90" f9="100" f10="200" f11="300" f12="400" f13="500" f14="600" f15="700" f16="800" f17="900" f18="1000" f19="1500" f20="2000" f21="2500" f22="3000" f23="3500" f24="4000" f25="4500" f26="5000" f27="5500" f28="6000" f29="6500" f30="7000" f31="7500" f32="8000" f33="8500" f34="9000" f35="9500" f36="10000" f37="11000" f38="12000" f39="13000" f40="14000" f41="15000" f42="16000" f43="17000" f44="18000" f45="19000" f46="20000" FilterLength="8191" InterpolateLin="0" InterpolationMethod="B-spline" v0="7.04272661764279" v1="6.16448872749138" v2="5.65860403548253" v3="5.12531159593115" v4="4.52543609695796" v5="3.89342099871611" v6="3.31154431227069" v7="2.8477800803602" v8="2.46233250240223" v9="1.99951069561551" v10="-1.61230496739004" v11="-1.59722847623063" v12="-1.28596193272411" v13="-0.747263167376525" v14="0.225102337252977" v15="1.14089206591608" v16="1.64363663195061" v17="1.86145834014199" v18="1.91773354385572" v19="0.467571619980635" v20="-0.242490525552772" v21="-0.616335215106106" v22="-3.09000385229017" v23="-5.01084909677736" v24="-5.45406595430094" v25="-4.95207685606585" v26="-4.22726163181089" v27="-3.57604328118872" v28="-3.05471383447166" v29="-2.6504623918233" v30="-2.3367060187629" v31="-2.08577660930337" v32="-1.86957949409449" v33="-1.657149034576" v34="-1.41257844866036" v35="-1.09700311573004" v36="-0.679461982128697" v37="0.426773193638463" v38="1.47387868233131" v39="2.0534073612338" v40="2.24840779885265" v41="2.26702336590477" v42="2.22672593837941" v43="2.1741943166717" v44="2.12532414418715" v45="2.08461988531557" v46="2.05268482272932"

Here's what the improved version looks like, green line is EQ, blue is original:

I got the tanchjim one DSP for over a week now. I think it sounds really nice. smooth and natural with enough bass to be engaging without being overdone. The tonality of the mids are especially fantastic.

Non-sound assessments:
  • The fit comfort is average, not bad but could be better, I had to do some tip rolling.
  • Noise isolation is poor. It cannot be use comfortably in noisy environment.
  • Build quality is mediocre, clear plastic looks thing and the connectors are not reinforced with metal or anything.

to compare as a reference from my previous earphones:
Salnotes zero has a weird sharpness in the treble and lack of bass without EQ,
CCA CRA has way overdone treble boost and plasticky mids.
KZ LingLong has awful driver flex and muddy, tame overall presentation.

I also tried them with a regular cable, without the DSP and it sounds nearly the same, just a bit more intense in the upper mids. I prefer the DSP version.

I hope thoses earphones won't suffer from moisture buildup.
I read somewhere that tanchjim use a special coating to protect from moisture build up. Anyone know something about that?

Some interesting findings about the different DSP presets:
  1. Instrumental follow Harman 2019 very closely.
  2. Default is Harman 2016 with a bit less bass. (really good, imo)
  3. Balanced is a flatter Harman 2016 -- a bit less bass and upper mids for a less intense sound.
  4. Popular is harman 2016 with more bass, good for commercial music I guess.
  5. Natural is kind of like IEF Neutral 2023 but with a dip in the lower mids, perhaps the most 'opiniated' of all the presets? Or am I missing what target is it refering to?

last but not least, a scan of the manual showing the polarity and how to properly do an over the ear fit:

Update: I am experimenting with autoEQ and differents targets via squiglink.

My favorite is the IEF neutral 2023 'autoEQ'ed from kr0mka measurements.
Using the 9038s E1DA as a source. I get a smooth, spacious and very detailed sound with the right amount of body and decent bass. It is really impressive. This is the best sound I ever got from IEMs regardless of the price. Really astonishing stuff. I am attaching the EQ for reference (.txt file), You can import it in equalizerAPO, hiby android app and soundsource macOS equalizer.
If you are reading this, please try and let me know what you think. Cheers.

Hi everyone,

I need help. The inner cable of my Tancjim Darling broke. Can it be repaired and how can it be fixed?

Thank you

Do you have a soldering kit or a nearby repair shop?

Not much talk about Tanchjim on this forum? The Origin is quite popular with a number of reviewer's at the moment, would have thought more would be interested in them 🤷
I received them earlier today, and they seem really great 🙂

The Origin is not bad for a midFI single DD, though I think the tuning nozzles were gimmicks sadly.

The Origin has one of the bigger soundstages compared to the midFI single DD benchmarks like the Simgot EA1000 and DUNU Falcon Ultra, and even the predecessor Tanchjim Oxygen.

Anyways, there's a new TANCHJIM 4U that was shown at the recent Singapore Can Jam. This contains a DMT4 DD. It has 4 tuning options via a bass dial vent located at the inner aspect of the IEM, something akin to the Sennheiser IE80S.

Very transparent sounding (but bass can of course be jacked up a bit should you wish to). Safely tuned, love the timbre.

I think it retails at 70ish USD according to the rep. Worth keeping an eye on this one.

Yeah, there is always something new on the horizon in this hobby, especially with IEM's :D
I'm liking the Origin more and more as I'm listening to it, and today I got the S12 Pro to compare it against. A completely different animal, but I think they will complement each other quite well. Will see :)
