Ok, I have the HD598.  I like them but tried the B&W P7 (on ear ($400)) and it was a more fun listen with more base, energy and active sound.  I plan on buying a headphone that complements the HD598 for different types of music.

I am leaning toward the X2's based on my reading.  They are about $300, maybe less if I can catch a sale.

If I am going to drop $300 on the X2's what do you recommend that is at or under $400?  Any support for why it is better would also be great.

Only criteria is that the phones be
1) Over the Ear
2) open or closed, but I think I prefer open
3) portability does not matter.  I listen only at home and am stationary.
4) source is iphone 6 256 kbps but am fine with upgrading to an DAC/amp in a couple months and ripping some music off my CD's in a lossless format.

Thanks.

Just bumping this for you since I am interested too.  I bought the X2 recently and wonder if they are better than another HP in the same price range or even a couple hundred bucks more.

The Hifiman-HE400i. But for it to truly shine you'll need an amp.

In case you missed it.  They are on sale at Amazon for $199 for the next 5 hours.
