SYSTEM OF A DOWN is the best metal band right now. They mix melody with hard guitars and syncopated EVERYTHING!!! Check out the time changes. I am sorry that I am rambling, but you really gotta check these guys out if you're into metal.

That was pretty pathetic rambling, man......seemed fairly concise to me

want time changes, melody and metal? you want Dream Theater. sorry, but there's always a band out there that does it better than the mainstream..

No way man. I consider Dream Theater to be mainstream too. Anything I have heard of is mainstream to me. Some of that weird esoteric **** y'all listen to is coo, but DT is mainstream if System is.

Brett

BTW did not mean to imply that what y'all listen to is ****

i dont think chop suey is a good song.. too popish, not straight metal.. has a poppy tone to it... hmm they have gone mainstream i guess... when i was listening to ratm a lot a couple of years ago, people on a rage forum were comparing em to rage.. they are too popish in my opinion.. though i should be seeing em live late jan 02 for BIG DAY OUT!!

I'm not really into metal but I couldn't help but love Toxicity. In the UK SoaD aren't very mainstream, or at least they're not getting 24/7 radio play. Anything to cut through the swathe of garage/dance/plastic pop we're pummeled with

How about some less well known metal?

Nightwish - actually mainstream in Finland, far from it in the US, definantly extremely good. They play power metal, it is more straight forward the progressive but tends to be more exciting. And the vocals! The singer is sooo good!

If you want to try something with an irish type sound try -

Skyclad - Metal with a fiddle and some folkish stuff, fairly unrefined, but good irish music is that way after all

. A quick song to check out is "Spinning Jenny", I love that stacatto singing along with the fairly simple but well played rythms, and the fiddle just adds to the fun

Black 47
Flogging Molly

In the vein of DT (I would consider DT mainstream, the song "Pull Me Under" appeared on MTV) -

Shadow Gallery - Softer, more vocals (Better vocals too), but some heavy fast stuff, good to excellent overall.

Royal Hunt - Heavier then DT, kind of like stratobvatius.

Tempest - more folky, some prog metal thrown in but more emphasis on the folk. Rather interesting stuff. They sound a bit like the 70s style prog groups too.

I think some early Prong wouldn't go astray - not really what *I'd* call metal, but extremely visionary for its time.

doomer - CDnow probably, Amazon works good, and a good local CD shop is also a good thing. Newbury Comics is alright here, but they don't even get all the big names like Therion in very well, and Nuclear Blast is a pretty big label. Best Buy also has a surprisingly good selection, and often I will see a couple Therion CDs there.

I think Royal Hunt is on Magna Carta, which has decent distribution, should be able to find them at best buy.

If all else fails, Amazon.com generally has it.

I was caught by the song at first too, but then I listened to the words and realized that song makes no sense whatsoever. Now it just annoys me.

I know what you mean. I find the lyrics to be very sporadic and nebulous. This can mean that either a) they are deeper than just first look, or b) they are just gibberish. Who knows? I don't. I do think that the lyric, "self-righteous suicide" and the subsequent reference to Father in "Father into your hands I commend my spirit" leads me to believe that the song is referencing Jesus Christ in some way, most likely in a blasphemous way. As a Christian, this would bother me if it were the case, but I still can respect the musical talent that these guys have. Decide for yourself though.

I actually loathe almost everything about "heavy metal" and/or it's modern equivalent "rap rock". However, this band are so far ahead and above the rest of the pack their in it's not even funny. This band has real musical talent.

However, you realize they're just updating Queen and re-processing it for the '00s, yes?

Are you referring to System of a Down? Because quite frankly they are a complete bore next to some real good metal. Therion, Symphony X, Within Temptation, Nightwish, so much more interesting.
