I have been very happy with my dac/amp combo (odac->hot audio thunderbolt)  for listening to music from my computers.  I use both a laptop and a desktop so the usb connectivity is nice.  I've recently switched from PS3 gaming to computer gaming.  I do not currently have a dedicated sound card in my rig because for music, the ODAC was plenty.  Now that I am addicted to BF3, I started to look into a set of decent (price vs performance) surround cans and was disappointed to see that most of it is just software emulation.  I'd like to avoid buying more hardware if I can--especially since it is only for gaming.  The computer is not used for watching movies.

Is it possible to generate virtual surround with the odac?

Thanks

The ODAC itself has no surround support at all, it is a simple stereo USB DAC with no drivers. So, if you want virtual surround (like Dolby Headphone) for headphones, you need to either use software emulation, or buy a sound card.
