I'm always about finding new music. I try not to listen to older music, because I noticed at a young age that older folks seem to get stuck in the past, and only listen to music from when they were in high school. I see that with some of my friends. I always said I would never do that, so I listen to new music primarily. I found some good new metal albums recently:
The new Ghost just came out, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet (maybe today).

Have to agree. I was most excited to try a Headamp CFA3T prototype at CanJam HK. That fell through. What a let down. Disappeared for 6months. Looks like nothing new. I guess there's the Final DX6000. But that's a far cry from the promised X8000. Will check in again in 6months.The hobby has kind of been boring recently. Perhaps I need a new amp or dac. I want a new high tier TOTL pair of headphones. I don't really deal with mid-fi stuff.

My "fun" for this hobby with my endgame chains more or less in place has been trying midfi offerings and looking for giants in lower price categories.
That and I fell back into speakers. Grabbed a flagship pair of ESLs... those have been something special.
For me, my titans in this category are the Sierra, JOAL and ES-2a.
Not that they're lift altering, but they are great for the cost, in their own respective ways.

I like the new Ghost single and they are a lot of fun, great sense of humor, great songwriting, actually and have seen them a couple times live, also.
Very true about the need to keep searching for new music as one solution to the ennui that can set in with your set up; I tend to cycle through the encyclopedia of rock history too much and need to put more of an effort in music of the last five to ten years, but simultaneously the challenge is so much good music has already been made, but nothing quite like the staying dialed into contemporary music as well.

I noticed this too. Whatever was popular when people are about 13-18 becomes "their music" it seems. There was some study that confirmed this, and they say people become close minded to new music after about age 33.
When I was in High School Nine Inch Nails was my favorite band. I haven't listened too them regularly in years, but I use them to compare headphones a lot because I have heard The Downward Spiral hundreds of times.
When I saw Death Grips in concert it was cool seeing people 20 years younger then me talking about how they got into NIN after listening to Death Grips.
NIN was my favorite band in high school too! The Fragile is an album that was so emotional to me. It was my $&*^. I still think the best concert I've been to is a NIN one in Hartford, CT. Trent Reznor put on a great show. I even got a bootleg of the exact show in my Roon database.I noticed this too. Whatever was popular when people are about 13-18 becomes "their music" it seems. I also like Death Grips a lot too. Though they are getting a little bit older now. Now, I'm just focused in on new music, always. I miss out on the classics, but I try to listen to some old school stuff from time to time. It's important to remember the classics, but I'm focused in on new stuff. Every Friday a 100 albums come out, every Friday. I have a filtering mechanism, but it's hard to keep up with everything. I'd rather stay in the present, than stay in the past

My tastes changed vastly from 13 (1970) - 32 (1989). I've pitched a lot of stuff overboard thru the years. And new stuff I listen to resembles stuff I liked before.I noticed this too. My parents were not into Hendrix, Who, King Crimson, etc. Just like I didn't care for Death Metal and Rap.
Roon is amazing for finding new music that you might like based on your tastes and its algorithm. There is so much new music being pumped out these days on streaming platforms you can spend hours and not find anything you like. Roon is invaluable to me for finding new music I have at least a decent chance of liking. And yes, hearing new music is always great. My Roon library is constantly being added to. My favorite is to get several albums of new music and semi-new music (and sometimes older, tried and true albums) into a Shuffle and just hit play.
Random nit -- I do wish the Roon shuffle feature was better. It seems to group many songs from the same album or like, 2-3 albums and play in sequence. I wish it truly was a 'shuffle' feature and picked unique songs from every album I picked instead of groups of songs in order. It could be a long time before I even hear a song from an album I added.

people who grew up with parents using cds also like that music, hence some of my generation's obsession with popular 80s and 90s bands.

Perhaps a break from audio is needed to be able to come back and enjoy what you have after a period of absence. I know I'm super guilty of getting restless, even though I'm really running out of things to upgrade and I'm very pleased with the sound I'm hearing.
Absolutely, being on forums doesn't help with this at all.

I don't think being active on the forum is necessarily tied to making things "boring" as it's engaging with others over a common and passionate hobby. But taking a break from listening for a while can be beneficial. If your system is tweaked out/great and you're still feeling bored or restless, when you come back after a time you can re-appreciate how good it actually sounds. Or pinpoint more directly what needs work.

I meant being on the forums doesnt help with upgraditis and restlessness.
Kinda depends on the threads you're into lol. Some of my subscribed threads I only have mild interest in. It's only the ones that push upgrades that might do this. I'm totally stoked with my gear atm so nothing is really pushing me into a direction, and money is always a consideration at the high levels. FOMO looms large with audiophiles, bar none. It's healthy to keep it in check if you can. Can't own/try everything. Shows help but that's a whole other animal.I meant being on the forums doesnt help with upgraditis and restlessness.
By "boredom" I suspect he's bored with his gear because its super familiar, feeling upgradetis or hasn't heard other systems to compare it with, or just something else. It can be a vacuum with headphones

Yea I think this is highly personal. I think for some people, buying new gear is the biggest reward of the hobby that primarily drives them. The only issue with this is finite funds and the fact that new gear that's transformative takes time to be developed and released. It really is most beneficial to get to a place where you can value the music sessions above all. I've been using my system 3-4 times a week consistently for the past 5 or so years. I haven't been as dedicated to the hobby in almost 20yrs really. Now I have bought a lot of gear in the past 5 years, but I can go quite some time without a new purchase while being totally engaged, while also coming to this site every day. It's a really good place to be.
As mentioned here though, a nice break away when traveling is pretty refreshing each time.
