Since there are a variety of factors involved with hearing loss; aging, environmental contributors, illness, etc. I thought the following information might be beneficial to people who wear head/earphones regularly that are prone to hearing loss over time. Peruse the below links and research on your own time. This information can also benefit non-Head-Fi people in your life who might suffer from hearing loss. Of course the cost of these devices are quite high, but there is potential insurance coverage that can help.
There are three links I'll be posting. One for U.S. residents (The Esteem), and another for EU residents (Carina) along with an academic journal article that explains both of these devices in great detail. It's a long but worthwhile read to fully grasp each of their technologies.
Both products offer middle ear fully implantable hearing devices. Fully implantable devices require no external devices to wear. Everything is housed inside of your middle ear. Semi-implantable devices (typically implanted in the inner ear) are Cochlear implant devices that require a separate external device to function properly.
The Esteem device (US) for example uses a familiar material that is known to Head-Fier's. Piezoelectric transducers. The Carina device (EU) uses a similar but different method for their implantation that achieves the same outcome.
