[Drastion]

This is a tough one I know as sub bass is not easy on the cheap. Most people would probally recomend a denon 7000, hd650, or LCD-2. But for a more modest budget for something you could go out with and not be so afraid of breaking or getting stolen.

I'd definitely recommend Sony MDR-V6. I was really impressed with its sub bass response, which as I recall was very similar to my current headphones Denon D2000.

This is probably your best bet for massive and affordable sub-bass.  
 
If you wanted something in a smaller/less conspicuous form factor, I'd look into the Denon AH-D1100 (for a more bass oriented presentation), or the Creative Aurvana Live (solid sub-bass extension, but a more balanced presentation overall).

The D2000 and pro900 are 2 models with good sub-bass to consider if you want to spend a bit more.

In that range consider the XB1000 as well. Rated down to 2hz. Ridonk.

Again, you're trading punch for sub bass rumble as you move up the XB chain.

So not much sub bass on the sony XB500? These are in my budget the 700's are to expensive.

The XB500 isn't a bad choice, but as you go up the chain in the XB series you get a lot more sub-bass for your money. Also, the XB700 can usually be had for right around $80 USD (which is about what 50 pounds is at right now according to google).

I'm always very impressed with the sub-bass of the Koss Pro DJ100. It's accurate and there is not much mid-bass hump, so many people incorrectly think it's "bass light" which is pure non-sense.
The M50 has more of a mid-bass hump, but I believe the Dj100 has better sub-bass extension.
 
Price of the DJ100 is $80. It's not bass heavy, but balanced/accurate with a slight bass hump. I use M50 pads on my mine for the best bass. Bass can suffer with a poor seal.
 
There's also the KRK KNS-6400 for $80-$100. More mid-bass than the 8400, but less forward sub-bass. Goes down very low without any problem at all.
 
BTW hows the bass on the K81DJ? Decent sub-bass or no? Does it have more bass than the DJ100? Probably does, which I don't think I want. Tempted to get this headphone lately.

I had the exact opposite experience with the Sony XBs... The XB500 was the punchier headphone with the XB700 being more sloppy, as in the XB500 were pretty tight for the amount of bass they dish out while the XB700 destroyed the mids. Furthermore I don't rate either of these phones at 2Hz or 4Hz or anything silly like that, it's monotone one-note bass, there is no real definition like some of the pricier options.

That's almost exactly what we were saying...The 500 is more punchy and the 700 is more rumbly (sloppy or not).
 
They both have poor mids (which is horribly obvious), but they respond well to EQ if you want a good all rounder. I liked them stock for bass centric stuff.
 
They're rated down to 3 and 4hz, but realisticly there's a slight dip at ~60hz and they start to roll off at ~20hz. That's still very good for the price.
 
I disagree with the one note comment (especially compared to others in the price range), but that's really more a matter of opinion.
 
IMO, still the most impressive sub-bass for under $100 by far.
 
EDIT: Those numbers were for the XB700. The 500 rolls off pretty hard around 60hz, rather than a small dip like the 700.

Don't care about mid or top end as got other headphones for that just need to know if the 500's can re-produce down to around 25-35Hz well without being muddy, I want to be able to hear what's going on down there.

I'd have to say no. It's been awhile since I heard them though. Much more recent owner of the 700s, which I think would do the trick.
