Hey guys,

Never had a full size headphone before but I'm looking to get an entry-level (or pre-entry level at this price?) pair for below $50 for a friend.

I realize 90% of threads posted are "research for me and give me the answer" but I'd gladly accept links to comparisons for entry level headphones, I couldn't find much.

He listens to rock, Big beat electro, classic rock, and some hip hop

Thanks again

These are two that I looked at a lot lately because I also have been looking for my first pair of headphones. Both over the ears, harx700 single cable, ham750 double. They've both been regarded as pretty good bases for headphones to build off of according to the reviews I've read. There are more out there, but these are the only two I've been looking at lately.

JVC HA-RX700 ($35)

Thanks for the list, exactly what I was looking for.

I guess I mean on the ears?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, looking into them all now.

x2 on the recomendations. If the 'over the head' style is a must, get the PortaPro's. They have a peculiar look but you'll be hard pressed to find a better sounding headphone at the price; not to mention the no-questions-asked lifetime warranty. Oh! and they're really comfortable too!

cheers!

I just purchased the RX700's as the same position as you, HAM750 vs RX700. I went with the RX700 as my entry point because i felt they would last longer and could be modded and used for better purposes in the future.

If over-the-head is a must, I'm seconding the Portapros. I've demoed them several times and they're real winners (warranty is nice too). Plus I think they look awesome :]

I made a noob mistake, I don't think I meant over the head. The style I'm looking for is the same style the HA-M750 and HA-RX700 are. I think I have it narrowed down to those two but I'm favoring the HA-M750 because of the price.

Oh. You mean full-sized maybe?

Try the Shure SRH240s. I've only heard the 840s, but they're supposedly just a lesser version. They're about $2 over your budget.

I was just searching in a similar price range, and I came across many mixed reviews of the SRH240. Might just be because people are anxious to cast them aside for the 440 or 840 though. Haven't heard them myself.

As for sub $50, I'm not really sure what that is for most people as where I live everything is much more expensive. That HA-M750 you're looking at is $100 at my local store, though I'm sure I could get it for less online. Here is a great starting point for comparisons.

Anyways, I've only had experience with a few decent sets of headphones (nothing incredibly high end), but they may all be in your price range. I was once given a pair of Porta Pros at work and they indeed sounded great, but they don't seem to be what you're looking for. The set I have now I am extremely happy with, the Panasonic RP-HTX7 which seems to have gotten good reviews on this site, and have been compared to the AKG K81DJ. Lastly, I just bought a set of AKG K99 headphones today for a Christmas gift. I listened to them in store and they sounded very good to me, if not a little thin and lacking in bass. Very clear and quality sound though, at least in my limited experience.

Again, not totally sure what is sub $50 where you live, but that's my two cents.

Edit:
Panasonic RP-HTX7 on Amazon
AKG K99 on Amazon
