The MX400 is the same as the MX500, except without the volume slide (which may even decrease sound quality).

I'm looking for the best buds too (under $50. I have KSC 75s but I'm going to try using my phone for music going to/from work and for the summer I'm looking for ultra-compactness). From searching on here it seems like it always come down to either the MX400/500 and the Sony MDR-E838 or E888.

can anyone who has owned both Senn and Sony buds give a comparison?

I think someone said that the Sonys had more bass and treble but the Senns sounded more natural (with limited bass). How are the Senns for rock? (for me, I don't need bloated, boomy bass but I would like there to be SOME bass).

My girlfriend's iRiver H10 came with Sennheiser MX400 earbuds. I can say pretty emphatically that my modded E838s wiped the floors with them. Compared to the 838s, they lacked dynamics, narrowed soundstage, less detail, much less 'sparkle', less bass, had some sort of overbearing hump somewhere in the lower mids, had much less 'air', and were less comfortable.

MX550 has no depth, bass, and it does sound a bit tinny.

There's an MX750 now???

I really prefered the sound of my e888 to the mx500 until they broke
