Its for a 12 by 13 room.
The speaker/soundbar will either be wall mounted or placed near a wall so front ported stuff is prefered.
It seems like these are the most common options:
Micca mb42x
Pioneer bs22
Fluance sx6
Wharfedale diamond 10.sr (accessories4less is selling it for around $150)
Polk monitor series
Would the back ported design be a problem? There will only be a few inches of space.
The only front ported bookshelf speakers i found (near the price range) is the polk t15 and the infinity primus p143/p163. The t15's measurements look atrocious so I'd like to avoid it.

Any impressions or reccomendations?

Thanks for the help.

I seem to recall a guideline about this that said you should ideally be "at least 2X the port diameter away from the wall" - or something like that. The guys over at http://www.avsforum.com/ would probably know the details.

I know that i have said that a port should have a few inches of space from the wall. I dont recall the 2x port diameter but i have seen it on a few partsexpress threads. I was hoping that someone with more experience than me could give me a bit more detail.

Avsforums was my first choice for this topic but im not getting much input (i may have put the thread in the wrong section) lol

I saw a review of Teac ls 265 HB the reviewer said it was the best speaker that he have ever heard. It also look stunning i suggest you take a look at them.
http://www.amazon.com/Teac-LS-H265-2-Way-Speaker-System/dp/B004R929AY
I use a Micca MB42X and it sound good for movies and bass heavy songs, but for critical listening go for Pioneer BS22 or Teac

I made this thread for a friend btw
Should i try to convince him to get into a little speaker build (if so, any advice)?
The vifa tc9 is pretty popular over at diyaudio (and its really cheap)
Partsexpress also sells other drivers(im kinda curious because dayton just released their new planar tweeter: the ptmini-6) prebuilt mdf enclosures, and flared bass ports.
Its pretty easy to find crossover design calculators, l pad calculators, and bass port length stuff.
Im not completely sure about the crossover and l pad though. Is it ok to ignore the change in resistance produced by the l pad? If not, how do you figure out the overall change?

If you want best performance for the money buy the Dayton Overnight Sensations speaker kit from Parts express that way you will be saving about a 100 dollars..just make sure to do it carefully, anyway they give almost everything except a soldering iron and a screw driver. So if you managed to build the Overnight sensations you will have a pair of bookshelf speaker worth 300 or more $ at the price of 120$ and you can learn how to build a speaker.

Thanks for the links. I've never looked through partsexpress's speaker kits.
We're both really curious about planar and ribbon tweeters so im not sure if he'll go with a full kit.
Edit: Hes ok with leaving the planar tweeter out

Is there any reason not to use craft store polyfill or is it better to use this stuff?

Is there any easy way to explain what phase is and why the change occurs in certain crossovers?

Jan 6, 2015 at 11:07 PM Post #15 of 24
Sound is a wave, right? So, it has peaks and valleys. If you play a single pure frequency, the sound wave looks like a sine wave (just like an AC signal, because it *is* an AC signal). When you send the audio signal through a crossover, the components in the crossover (capacitors, inductors, etc) affect the phase. Each "order" of a crossover shifts the phase 90 degrees. So, a "2nd order" crossover will shift the phase of the sound by 180 degrees. That's the same effect as reversing the polarity of the speaker wire on the driver.

The crossover is not a hard cut-off between the woofer and tweeter. There is a slope to the reduction in signal around the cutover frequency. Anywhere that two speakers are operating at the same frequency, if they are 180 degrees out of phase from each other, they will be cancelling each other out. You can be creating holes in your frequency response that will sound weird. By ensuring the drivers are still in phase with the crossover in place, you avoid that weirdness and everything sounds right (or as right as it can!).

http://www.diyaudioandvideo.com/FAQ/Crossover/

Just to add a bit more, speaker design can be a VERY complex subject. Even something as simple as a crossover will make your eyes glaze over.
http://www.enjoythemusic.com/diy/0311/crossover.htm

Quite frankly, this is why most people just stick to very well known recipes for speaker designs. There are "cookbooks" of speaker recipes that you can find online or at Parts Express, Amazon, etc.
