Looking to DIY or buy an DAC and/or amp to drive my Victor HP-M1000's. I figure they're underpowered because I'm missing out on big bass that they're supposed to have. Currently I have a modded AV-710 which I could firmware mod to get bit perfect digital out, so something with digital in would probably be preferable.

I've heard good things about the Zero and ZhaoLu DAC/Amp combos which fit in my price range, but I wasn't sure if a DIY attempt would produce better results. Theres also these

NEW BIG 24bit/192Hz HI-FI DAC DIY KIT,ASSEMBLED MODULE - eBay Single Disc Players, CD Players Recorders, Home Audio, Consumer Electronics. (end time 26-Jun-08 22:49:02 AEST)

24bit/192KHz DAC DIY KIT , FULL ASSEMBLED KIT - eBay, Processors, Home Audio, Consumer Electronics. (end time 27-Jun-08 16:44:08 AEST)

DACs on eBay which look suspiciously cheap. Has anyone tried them before or recognise the layout?

Then theres the Mini TDA1453 and Extreme TDA1453 on HiFiDIY. I'm not sure what to buy

Personally I would spend a little bit more and buy the Fubar III...Only 40 dollars more.

The Zhaolu looks like a good choice also.

I just like the USB connectivity that the Fubar III uses.

No optical out from your AV710 into the Zhaolu...Fubar III does cost more money.

Pretty sure I can connect a Zhaolu off the toslink on an ]AV-710[/url], don't quite understand where you're coming from. The ZhaoLu has toslink in according to these pictures.

I don't really need a portable DAC/amp I'll be listening mainly at home. Fubar's a bit out of my price range, I need to get the thing shipped to Australia too lol

Yes the dedicated power supply will clean up the sound.

Certainly worth the little ole change they cost.
