Don't laugh, ok? I got my first "serious" headphones the other day; AT ESW9. Also got a Nu DAC2 mostly for my computer to receiver interface. Naturally my new cans sound great through it too. I understand that ESW9s don't really need an amp though. Certainly using them with my Squeezebox and iPhone 4S seems to bear that out. But I'm wondering if I'm running the risk of damaging the cans in not using amp sorta of like how speakers can be blown by under powering them?

Hello.
Do not say stupid question...
If your dac is NuForce uDAC-2 Headpone Amp and USB DAC (24bit/96kHz), the specs say:
Headphone impedance 16-300 Ohm (from16 up to 300)
And yours headphones are
Audio-Technica ATH-ESW9 42 Ohm
Nothing happen
Nice headphones and have fun

:)

Cheers
