Hi guys, I'm looking for guidance from anyone in Western Australia. I'm going to do a medical elective there for five weeks in September/October, and I'd like to have a bit of local knowledge about the area. First things first - where are the hifi shops?!?

What's Perth like for vinyl, whether new or second hand? Any must-see sights in the area? The hospital recommends that I stay in the YMCA hostel called Jewell House. I've heard some bad reports about it, my plan is to spend a week there, then find alternative (cheap) accomodation. Is it fairly easy to rent a room for a month in a studenty area? Would it be best to do this in Perth or Fremantle (where I'll actually be working)?
Thanks!

you are going to the town with arguably the finest headphone shop in Australia.
That which is run by Head-Fier Snufkin, who I have heard from riendly sources is a gentleman as far as corrupting people with headphones is concerned.
you will have a good time there.
link to website is www.headphones.com.au
As for what to do, you will arrive out of footy season else, I would have recommended watching a game of true blue Aussie Footy.
you will love it.

Enjoy oz and take care.

Shame about the Aussie Rules footy, it's always fun watching guys knock seven bells out of each other in the name of sport!

Hello cupples!

I'm a student at Curtin University in Perth.

I don't have many places to recommend because I'm usually don't have the time to look around much when I'm studying. When I'm not studying, I fly back to Singapore, even if the break is just a week long.

Anyway, the shop that is www.headphone.com.au(headphonic) stocks some good headphones and the guy at the counter was helpful and quite knowledgeable. I bought my MS-1 from him. However, the shop isn't much to look at and it's the only one in the area I think.

There are two audio specialist shops almost next to each other in Murray Street in the central shopping district. Douglas Hi-Fi and Sound Advice. However, beware of the guys at Douglas. They tried to sell me a pair of display HD580 for AU$350, thinking I was dumb. I just bought a pair brand new HD600 for less than that, although it was a rare deal. However, it is acknowledged that Sennheisers are very expensive in Australia as are many other headphone brands.

Whatever it is, welcome!

Hi Armers, I'll be working in Fremantle Hospital, well, more like following people around who are working. I'll be in Anaesthetics and Accident and Emergency for a few weeks as part of my medical studies. Shouldn't think I'll have any transport, I'm going to try and be as cheap as possible (so why am I going to the far side of the world then???

Things to do? Oooo, that's a tough one... any good gigs coming up, or any websites that tell you about events and stuff? Dunno about the clubbing though, but are there any good jazz clubs, coffee shops, beaches, classical concert halls, natural scenery, rugby matches to go to, that sort of thing?
Cheers!

its not just seven bells, but teeth, eyeballs, kneecaps, scrotum grabbing, eye-gouging... Ok the last 2 probably don't happen any more but you get the gist, you know.
Perth is quite a fun city, typical Aussie town with friendly people and a great variety in food like all the other capital cities here.

Try and get into the Australian outback if you can. I find even most Australians haven't experienced the outback and it's really worth it if you think you may like that sort of thing.
