So if i dont have a turntable and still want a good digital version of Icky Thump, how would I go about that? Because the CD mastering makes me want to put firecrackers in my ears and light them up.

Right, since it seems I'm stuck with the UK (XL Recordings) version of Icky Thump on vinyl, anybody know if it is done from the same master as the US version? I'm scared I've just ordered the second class version...

According to the buzz on the SteveHoffman forums, the XL Recordings pressing is also mastered by him. However, on all versions of the vinyl (US and UK alike), the credits are mislabeled as Vlado Meller having mastered them.

You can tell for sure by looking in the deadwax etching, there should be a line that says "SH+KG@AT" or something of that nature, which stands for "Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray at AcousTech"

I agree with LFF. Right now I buy only Steve Hoffman mastered stuff, XRCDs and ECM CDs. Most everything else sounds just a little off. Luckily, there are very few new mainstream releases that would appeal to me anyways. My system is still very basic but as my components evolve and improve, especially the cdp, inferior recordings become intolerable.

Ever since his talk at the National Meet, I've been on a little DCC CD buy binge. Nat King Cole, Elton John, Harry Belafonte.....just phenomenal sounding CDs.

My older brother weened my on old R&B stuff back in the 70s. When I saw this 4 CD set called "Groove On" that featured tracks from Earth Wind & Fire, Blue Magic, etc., I bought it in an instant. I know that these tracks are not critically acclaimed or close to audiophile quality, but hearing Blue Magic's Side Show almost brought me to tears. It sounded so unbelievably good compared to the regular release.

Then I became depressed because then I realized what SQ was available yet, we'll probably never get to hear our favorite music as they should be presented.

I've been amazed time and time again by Steve's work, he makes albums I've been listening to for decades come alive in ways I never imagined possible.

If you haven't been there yet, check out Steve's forum! Just click the link in my sig, that'll take you right there.

How is the best way to know which albums he has worked on?

Although, I don't think it's totally up to date with all the recent vinyl he's done for Because Sond Matters.

But this one does...http://www.stevehoffman.info/

He does a great job with the mastering.

He mastered Who's Next by The Who in the 80's, the cd can be had for like seven bucks on ebay Canada. Great Deal!

He didn't master every version of that CD, just certain ones.

You can find more info at his official discography and in his forums.

Thats where I found out about it, someone on that forum linked me to the cd that he did master and I bought it along with another Who cd that he mastered which is kind of a hits album. Both cd's were had for under twenty dollars. The Who's Next cd sounds very good.

I have his Van Halen album...smooth like butter. Listening to the crescendo in Ain't Talkin Bout Love gives me goosebumps. Apparently that particular project went very smoothly, as the original tapes (once procured) were in good condition. A MUST OWN. (even more than some other ones)

He did the recent Bad Company debut album, and that is a fun listen too.
Pretty much any cd of his can be viewed as an investment. You can always sell for what you paid immediatley, but if you're patient, you can sell later and make a nice profit.

Oh yeah, check out Disposable Heroes, off of his version of Master of Puppets. But bring a bib for the drool that will ooze out of your mouth.

That Bad Company album came out great. Why doesn't the radio ever play "Seagull"? I wouldn't have thought this band sucked so bad for so long if I heard more then the two beer commercial anthems that are stuck on repeat at the stations.
