STEREOPHILE 2005 500 RECOMMENDED COMPONENTS PUBLISHED!

Sep 7, 2005 at 2:29 AM Post #17 of 60
The K list means they haven't tested it yet, but they are going to test them soon. Then depending on the amount of adverstising they get depends on how high they are rated.

I am kidding, because Ray doesn't advertise with them and he made the B list.

I don't think there are many K's or any that haven't made the list the next year though.

LOL, the Headmaster had a pretty long run here as FOMs a while back. It must still be a superb head amp (and preamp).

Interestingly, if I remember well Stereophile has reviewed the Etymotics, but they didn't make the list. Or maybe they haven't been reviewed by Stereophile and my memory fails me?

Also interestingly, no Sony SA in the list, not even in the K cat.

How much is it in the US? Send me your address rsaavedra and I'll pick it up here and mail it to you.

Sure, a few nice components ... but it looks as though Stereophile doesn't expend much effort to study what's going on in the headfi world. Seems like tokenism ... or serious gray matter deterioration (ostrich syndrome ... old fogeyism ... snobbery ... tunnel vision, etc.).

Hey thanks so much for the thought Archosman! If I remember well however, one issue alone in the US goes for around $5, with the shipping it will probably cost more than $10 in the end. I do have a P.O.Box in Miami, but still it will be probably around $7-$8, maybe not worth the hassle. But thanks a lot!

What's really cheap is to simply subscribe yearly over there in the US. The twelve magazine subscription I think goes for just $10.99 or something close to that, but each issue separately in a bookstore goes for close to $5. Weird pricing for sure, but pretty much all magazines are like that.

Stereophile seems to to be a bit biased toward *cough* those that purchase ad space from them.

But then again looking in sterophile for good audio advice is like picking an attorney or doctor at random from the phone book.

Well all the cynics can once again point to the fact that Cary has full page add on page 1 with glowing review of CDP product in this issue and picture on cover ......

But this is not unique to Stereophile, all stereo publications with add space have the same "conflict" which must be recognized, but that doesn't mean there isn't some useful info to be had.......at least you get some good pictures and accurate physical description of product.

Really best way of getting info for many years has been forums and web based sites like 6 Moons, Stereotimes, Positive Feedback etc. The major audio magazines know almost nothing about headphones and associated gear since people with expensive stereos rarely spend time listening to headphones, so don't put much stock in headphone recommended list in current Stereophile mag.

Another thing to consider is that ad space may be sold after the reviews have been made (Hi! We gave your cdp 100%, wanna buy some space?). I like to think it's that way so I won't feel I'm being double ripped off (first by the mag, then by the manufacturer...)

Other than the Senns (I own both 600 and 650) I'm pretty clearly a B-list guy.
Not much to temp me on that A-list.

the 600s don't belong in the A list. The A list was for sound consideration above all with no practical consideration at all. putting 600s and 650s both there is like saying they sound the same.

600s belong in the B list where the practical consideration of price should come into play.

Nice to know that the Shure E5c made the A-list. I wish they give headphones more exposure.

IMHO MS2 and K240s should have been somewhere on that list. IMHO both are great values at their respective price points.
