can a good stereo amp with a headphone jack serve as an adaquate headphone amp? I tried it with the system we have at work with my Senn HD 600's and it sounded pretty good to me. I'm not expert by anymeans though. I'm sure this question has been addressed before but i couldn't find anything in the search.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Sure, a good jack can serve as an adeqate headphone amp.

You probably won't reach the HD600s full potential with a receiver jack, but it can sound pretty decent.

Of course, that doesn't mean it can't sound BETTER.

No. You would be amplifying distortion - compunding it. You need to go line out from the source to the headphone amp.

The headphone amp is designed to handle the high impedance of headphones than is a headphone jack on a receiver or speaker amp.

However, if you headphones are of relatively low impedance, like those desigend for portables (Etymotic 4P as an example) then the headphone jack would serve OK - assuming hum was no problem.
