Anyone heard the new SRS-4170 system? Just wondered how it compares to the old 4040 system.

Try stax thread.
I had 407+ 323S so it is not exactly 4070. Other have 507 +srm-600. And I have never heard of 404. So, sorry!

Well I don't exactly own that combo either. I have a 407 paired with a srmT1S. I will say that the 407 is a significant upgrade to the 404 and also an upgrade to the 404le. IMO the 404 was a disappointment. I actually liked the 202 better, and liked the older lambda signature better as well. I think stax have finally taken the lambdas in the right direction with the new drivers. Now they are finally a significant upgrade over the vintage lambdas; a long time coming IMO.
Thank you for the responses. I have a 4170 system on order (new 407 with SRM-006t) and collecting on Saturday. I wasn't blown away by the old 404 either so it'll be interesting to hear the difference (hopefully there is one!)

I think you will really enjoy it. It should sound a lot like my setup since the 006t is basically the new version of the T1 series. I sold my srm1 mkII after hearing them on my T1S. I think the 407s really goes well with tubes which is why I believe stax paired them with that amp instead of the 323. But they will outperform the 404 no matter which amp you put them on.

Took delivery of my Stax 4170 kit just last week.
I have to say that so far I am impressed, even took a days holiday just to enjoy them.
Previous long term favourite has been the Grado GS1000i, which I still rate very highly.
However I wanted to try the electrostatic ear speakers approach hence my new purchase.
I find the detail extraordinary even compared to the Grado. It is early days so far but so far so good.
The rest of the kit is iPod classic, lossless format, via Wadia digital i170, via Musical Fidelity M1 DAC and finally the Stax
SR-407/SRM- 006tS.

Have to agree. I actually had the PS1000's before the 4170 and I much prefer the Stax for the (even) wider soundstage and bass. Maybe vocals are just a little recessed compared to the Grado's but I can live with that. Using with Quad Elite CDP and Elite power amp.

It has been years since you posted about the SRS-4170. I am buying my first Stax set-up and wondered if I am headed in the right direction with the 4170. In retrospect, any advice?
Thanks for your help!
