Hello everyone and thanks in advance for your insights!

I just came back from Japan, and brought back some nice STAX loot — a used SR-009 and a SRM 006ts amplifier. I tried them both in Japan and they sounded great (compared to my current SR 407 and SRM 3). Both of the components are used, the dealer threw in the SRM 006tS very cheaply as a package deal with the headphones. I also bought a 100v step down transformer at a camera shop in akihabra.

Now that I’m back, i tried using the SRM 006ts with the voltage transformer, but the transformer is humming loudly, which it didn’t do in my hotel room in Japan. I tried plugging in my old Lambdas, and while the amplifier does work, it seems much quieter/less powerful than in Tokyo. I measured the voltage before the converter ( 118v at the outlet) and after (89v), which seems too low. The voltage converter also seems really lightweight for a full transformer, so perhaps it uses some other design that doesn’t work without a load. Under load ( on the inside of the power plug in the amp) I measured just 69v. It could also be that my old multimeter is not very well calibrated for high ac voltages.

Is it possible that the bad voltage transformer causes humming? Could anyone recommend a better model to convert 120v to 100v that is available in the US.

Otherwise, how easy is it to change the voltage of the transformer primary? In other threads, i saw something about changing jumpers on the board, however there are only two wires from my transformer primary to the PCB (I took some pictures here: https://imgur.com/a/XExC0). I also noticed that the outer insulation on the transformer wires is peeling a bit is that just age? I have some soldering/electronics experience, but have never worked with a transformer since high school (and never fancy ones that involve multiple taps).

Thank you very much for your help!

Thanks a lot for the recommendation!
Immediately after posting I ordered this one just to try out another converter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PC4JL4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This one, which is much heftier, produces 101.2 V, and the Stax system works wonders. The converter you linked to is manufactured by Nissyo, which also made the converter that did not work at all. Amazon reviews (https://www.amazon.com/Voltage-Tran...1510122873&sr=8-8&keywords=nissyo+transformer) tell the tale of another STAX enthusiast whose amplifier burned out when using that converter, so I would be wary of using their products. The more expensive one might be fine.

Happy listening!
