Stax SR-X9000

Given his newfound wonder on Sr-009 that Spritzer logged 10 hrs with (head-case), I look forward should he share his view on his SZ9-1200 range 009 vs Sr-Omega w 007 mk1 driver vs Sr-x9k.
To be fair though, he does state he thinks its not a serial number thing, and that its likely a QC issue with that particular set. Probably not worth worrying about a specific serial range of 009 being "better" than the others.

The QC is something I don’t quite understand - a QC defective set that sound better than his past 8 sets of sr-009’s ? 🤔
my thinking is - if there’s hope for SR-009 in comparison to x9k, 007mk1, or even L500mk2, then there’s some chance for me instead of the current pricey flagship 🤓

They're all very different, but very good. What stax model have you loved most so far? May be able to help steer you either way based on that and may save you some money and peace of mind. :)

Simple. 009s louder than x9000. Expectedly. Sounding great. T8000 drives both.

Just worked and listened with the new Stax SR-X9000. What I really like is the large opening of the earpad and freedom you feel when the position changes a bit. The sound stays the same. Much more close to listening to speakers than any other headphone I use. The presentation is very clean yet not artificial. That is perhaps one of the reasons of some views that the headphone is not very dynamic(?). But setting the volume a bit higher works (with classical at least), without any obvious distortions and with very clean layering of the textures making it easy to identify individual sounds in a complex passage. The outside mesh (that indeed is not quite parallel to the driver) diffuses the sound a lot more than that of the 009S. Seems a development in acoustic design.

Only SR-SC1, which I find that driving by SRD-7 mod for 580v 5-pin sound better than its SRM-222 driver.
Was thinking of iESL as replacement of SRD, should I be able to get a non-lambda Stax

QC issue could just mean that for whatever reason (and it could be a lot of different reasons) they sound different. Reminds me of Tyll's original pair of Focal Utopia back in 2016 which sounded different from all the other pairs he reviewed and measured, and caused the whole Utopia vs. LCD-4 saga with Bob Katz.

Your best bet, if you don't like the tonality of the SR009, would be SR-009+EQ to your preferred tonality, rather than a search for a mythical serial number, and especially as that mythical serial number pair likely won't sound like spritzers, which was posited by spritzer himself

I can highly recommend EQ on the 009’s. I eq my 009’s in Roon and upsample to 1.5MHz in HQPlayer (May dac and Carbon amp), and those two processes takes my listening experience from good to the best i have heard (most high-end headphones i have listened to but i have not heard the x9000 yet).
I would think that only bass heads will find the eq’ed 009’s lacking…

Just out of curiosity, for those who are unlucky and have had the channel imbalance for the X9000, what headamps are you guys using? I've read somewhere that some specific electrostatic headamps don't have some kind of "ballasts for the bias supply", there for it will be more likely to arc the driver(s).

I'm just wondering if the imbalance problem may be due to the headamp, not the X9000 itself.

I personally have the X9000 (~ 120 hours of running) and 009S (3 years old) + BHSE headamp, and I have yet encountered any problems.

Cheers.

I've got a DIY T2. My 009S and 007's have been flawless, so I don't think my X9000 imbalance has anything to do with the amp. In fact, I took out my 007's when I thought the X9000's were off. I thought I was going crazy when I first noticed the problem. Nope, it's the headphones.

I purchased a 009S and BHSE at the end of 2019. The 009S developed a channel imbalance during the 1st week of use. The replacement and my X9000 (6 months old) have had no issues.

Friend of mine brought an L300 & Srm-252a amp set over to compare to the x9000/Novem and my vintage LNS.

Cliff notes:
1) srm-252a can NOT drive the x9000. Lol. Barely even gets loud enough on quiet songs and sounds totally dead. Soundstage is significantly smaller. This is not an acceptable solution - you’re better off with the opposite (L300 on a Carbon or BHSE).

2) L300 is a very good headphone for the price, but I prefer the LNS.
