Dust on the driver will kill it
How does that work? What's the process that kills the driver?
Humility can cause the charge to arch over the headphone (dangerous and will fry it) or in some cases there has even been mold growth.
I get the mold thing, but don't expect this to be very common. Arcing would be bad for the health of the driver, but I'd be surprised if the Stax engineers didn't design the driver such that this does not happen under normal conditions. Humid air is quite normal, especially in Japan, where Stax is at home. Also, I don't see how arcing would be a slow, gradual aging process -- it would rather be an instantaneous, catastrophic event.
Imbalances is a complex topic as there are different causes, some of which are gradual and can be easily fixed with amp adjustment - other times they quickly turn into dead drivers.
Ok, tweaking the balance control would compensate an uneven sensitivity between the two drivers. However, I'd be surprised if the channel imbalance is just a pure sensitivity issue. I'd rather think the degradation would also affect the frequency response or linearity of the driver. Are there any references/links to further explanations on what's going on?

I have kept my Omega in the wooden box they came in since I bought them in 1994.
That has kept them in perfect condition.
I there, I hate to be "that guy", but I am looking for an SR-Omega and if ever you're looking for a buyer I would love to talk!

Thanks all :)

Price and risk. Very few are willing to spend that kind of money on something internationally and have to deal with import taxes and whether there will be issues when it arrives.
