My publisher went to the CES show looking for new headphones for me to review. I had told him about the Omega III rumor. I will contact him and find out if it's true and what it's all about.
IMHO, there is no way that you can compare the 404's to the O2's. I and others have gone from the 404's (right Haj?) and never looked back. The 404's are very forward...you can feel them on your nose, but the stop at your ears (they don't go behind your head). The Omegas are more neutral while being slightly laid back. They give a real representation of what live music sounds like. The bass is subsonic, but only slightly visceral.
When it comes to comparing the 600 family to the O2's, I feel the 600/650 is no match for the Omegas.
My 14 y.o. daughter and I were doing listening tests with the Omegas hooked up to a stat amp, and the 600's hooked up to a $5000 Headroom Balanced Max (on loan). This gave the 600's a big starting point advantage over the Stax. We were listening to some 60's Jazz- "Bags Meets Wes" (Wes Montgomery and Milt Jackson) and then some Buddy Guy - "DJ Play my Blues" (hardcore riffin' rockin' blues)...2 completely opposite genres of music.
We were passing the 2 headpones back and forth for an hour, and without me saying anything to her, she looked at me with a puzzled look on her face, and said (while looking at the Senn's), "Hey where's the cymbals...the bass is hardly there, how come the sound is missing? The round one's (meaning the Stax) sound like they have more music coming from them!"
I just smiled at her and said, "Baby, you're my favorite daughter (she's my only daughter
), you're the apple of my eye. She understands it. In simple terms she summed it up.
BTW- The 007T or 717 amp only costs a $1000 if you buy it together with the O2's at Audio Cubes, so it's not such a big jump. It's somewhere around $2800 for both.
