i get the static with mine if i haven't used it in a while, a couple of quick spins left & right with the knob preferably without phones connected usually cleans out the static.

Oxidation/dirt on the little bitty wiper/brushes inside the volume pot. any volume pot i believe gets this..

The thing is, is that this is basically brand new?!?

My Hornet is noisy on the left channel when I adjust the volume; no noise at all otherwise. A bit annoying--I thought there was something wrong. Then I found a thread here where Ray explained the volume pot used in the Hornet may be noisy, but it is of better (sonic, I believe) quality than the alternative, quieter, pots he evaluated. I believe the noise audibility is related to headphone sensitivity in some way.

Unfortunately I cannot find this thread.

Perhaps this explanation applies to the Tomahawk. Either way, I'd call Ray to confirm.

from another thread where I posted about the same issue:

The scratchyness when turning has nothing to do with being hot or cold if the unit is on and no source is playing you can hear a scratchy sound when adjusting the volume knob on the tommo and Hornet is just the way the volume pot is!

Ray would love for that not to happen but there is no other quality pots that size anywhere to be found.

right, me too. I think it's just easier to notice with no music playing.

my guess is it's some kind of static / electrical buildup inside the pot, which is why turning it a few times seems to temporarily eliminate or greatly reduce it's presence in my experience.

Personally I think it's an acceptable compromise as I love the sound and action of the TH pot.

I get it with my Hornet that I just received last week. I never really gave it any thought and just assumed it's the way it is...

Correction: I went back and quickly turned the knob a few times and the static seems to have subsided--it's barely noticeable now, if at all.
