HE1000s now in favour again ;-)
Did a 2 hour listen with them this morning and then out the HD800 on and it just sounded a bit lifeless in comparison. Mind you thats the second time I have changed my mind ;-) They are both exceptional in my opinion. The HE1000 may give up a slight amount of detail, but they are way more forgiving and I think have even better soundstage than the HD800....to my ears anyway -)
 
Value for money without a doubt the HD800....but I promised myself money would not be the deciding factor as I will keep these for years

If you want value, consider a nodded HE6. If you have a decent speaker amp and like the HE sound, you should read some comments in the HE6 thread from those with experience with all mentioned headphones. Newer isn't always better.

I think if I wanted value I would have considered the HE6 or 560, but looks like I am going for the HE1000. Bit more cash than i expected to outlay but the project was to improve my HP set up. Along with the new Taurus amp I have done that for sure. Being fed by my Devialet 200, I did not believe headphones could sound this good.

Without a good speaker amp, the HE6 is not worth it though. IMO. It's one of those headphones that you have to build around, which I don't think everybody is willing to do

I have the Devialet 200. I would imagine it has the power, anyway HE1000 it is for me :smiley:

Yes I have the HE1000 at home on demo at the minute, they go well together to say the least. I am no headphone expert and this is the first time I have spent s decent amount of cash on my HP rig and wow it's well woeth it

Thats awesome! Glad you are enjoying your first foray into high end headphones! Just make sure your HE1000's are well built, don't have any loose connection, make any weird noises etc..

So today I ordered my HE1000 headphones They will be driven by my Devialet 200 into my Auralc Tauris MK2 headphone amp. I had the HD800 and HE1000 on home demo over the weekend which gave me a chance to compare them. The HD800 arrived first and straight out of the box sounded amazing. The new amp is quite a step up from my old one so not sure how much of it was down to this. But compared to my Q701s they were in a different league. Soundstage, clarity and detail in abundance. I sort of regretted asking for the HE1000 as at this stage I thought they could not match the HD800. I was wrong. The HD800 is an amazing headphone and if I had never heard the HE1000 then I would have been very satisfied with them. But the HE1000 arrived and changed all that. Wow! In my opinion soundstage is even better than the HD800. In short I felt it offered the same as the HD800 but was just more pleasing to my ears. The HD800 on certain tracks could sound a bit bright to me, some female vocals like Birdy for example had too much of a hiss for my liking. I feel the strengths of the HD800 would be with Classical music, I would imagine it excels at that. I took advice on here and tried to EQ out some of the brightness and after about two hours experimenting I achieved it. Well to a degree. The reason I even tried this was the large price difference. So I thought I had achieved this, until I put the HE1000 back on. It again just sounded better, more natural. More forgiving possibly. I have an album by Amber Rubarth-Sessions from the 17th Ward. Not usually my kind of stuff but I have grown to love this over the last few weeks. A track called Tundra I thought would be perfect to hear the HD800 on. It was, but again the HE1000 just did it better in my opinion. The percussion on this track with the HE1000 is absolutely stunning. Then a bit heavier stuff. Royal Blood, Arctic Monkeys, Foals etc. The HE1000 just did it all so well. I much prefer the look and the fit of the HD800 , a simple and beautiful design, oh and I much preferred the price too , but it was always going to be about the one I enjoyed the most and that was undoubtedly the HE1000. I just wish I could have the looks and fit of the HD800 with the sound of the HE1000……maybe one day.

Yes I think I have. I used to use my headphones a lot and then when I bought the Devialet 200 I just stopped using them as I did not get any enjoyment. I think the Dev and the PMC speakers was such a jump up in performance that my HP rig was just not uo to scratch. So 6 months ago I decided to look to upgrade it. As I am up in Newcastle its really hard to demo gear so I do a lot of research and reading and forum visiting. I then had a shortlist, and took it from there to hear gear for myself. I can honestly say I had no idea headphones could sound this good. Both the HD800 and the HE1000 sounded great.
I am now not sure I can listen to  music through my speakers ;-)

i like pmc speakers. i'm sure you'll still have a need for them.
