I browsed around a bit and couldn't really find anything fit what I was looking for. So here we go...

I was at work (ok I'm still here) and I just ripped my headphone out from the Y-split. I googled around and landed here and read some great tut's on making Y-Splits and all that fun stuff. Then I decided that I'm just going to go ahead and replace the cord from the Y-split to the 3.5 jack. The problem is I don't have any tools. No heat gun, heat shrinks, wire, etc... So I was wondering if anyone has a good list of things I would need to start this little project on a budget (want to try and spend under 70$).

I'll probably end up going to my local hobby shop and pick up all these goods, so here is what I think I need.

:Heat Gun
:Heat Shrink
:Soldering Gun
:Solder Wire
:Wire (not really sure what I need here)
:3.5 Jack (any Recomendations?)

Thanks :D

Hey there,

I found some stuff you could use

you could use this cheap heating gun:

with this soldering iron:

And this solder:

with these heat shrinks:

and this 3.5mm jack

with this silver plated copper wire

I believe that should end up being less than 70 bucks

I hope this helps! Cheers!

Ok, I've got everything but the wire. I accidently bought Solid wire :/

While I'm on the subject, what wire is normally used in headphones? I picked up 22-Gauge, and after reading around feel like that is a bit silly for headphone wire.

Edit: I noticed you said "this silver plated copper wire" but I'm not sure what Gauge to get D:

for iems, 24-29 gauge is OK. but i prefer 26-28 for it. 24 is too big with some iems and 29 is too thin for my liking.

Yah, i picked up some 22 a bit earlier and it feels a little to big. I think ill look around for some 26 then. Also, soldering is hard for a newbie like me! Anywho, thanks for the help so far, ive been reading the diy threads and quite like what I see.

How much of a sound quality difference would happen if I went with just copper and not silver plated for my wire?

Objectivists say none, except what differences you think you hear. Others will parrot the old, "silver adds more sparkle and top end" even though there's no hard evidence to support that notion. Unless you have 2 pair with the different wiring to compare, you'll never know of any difference anyway.
