BTW, Xevion, I saw that sly little comment comparing the 202's to V600's. That was not cool. I have headphones that came with a 9.99 cassette walkman that are better than the V600. Comparing the V600's to the 202's is like comparing Sony Street Styles to the Sennheiser Orpheus. In other words, anything can beat a V600.

this is what I suggest...
i realize that you are on a budget regarding cans....

but I think you should try the high end cans and find out what style of those cans you like in particular, and find a cheap alternative of them.

It appears that you would probably like the high end wooden grado sounds, like the rs-2, rs-1 cans, because they have a warm tonal feel, and impactful bass. I find that the others have most of a neutral sound, but also leaner sound.

The sennheiser 600 may not be the sound you desire at time being, and neither the akg 501
however, they are neutral with great soundstage and their characteristics tend to change with the amplifier you choose for them. I like them alot because you can really use them as a reference cans, and are very enjoyable and comfortable.

I used to be a big mid- bass junkie, and didn't even notice that cans didn't have deep bass, I was liking midbass alot.

However as time passed on, I got the v6, and started to enjoy the flatter midbass and deep bass through to the midrange.

I then got the rs-2 grado's after comparing them to alot of cans, and I enjoy them perhaps the most
because it's a reasonable compromise with still a warmer tone, with hardly any harshness nor sibilience, and perhaps to me the most transparent. I enjoy the liquid midrange as well.

However, the AKG 501's I've been recently listening to, has been very very nice to me as well, they are extremely comfortable, and I truely enjoy the soundstage and neutralness of them.
They however, I feel do lack deep bass or just has a big roll off at around 50 hrtz and below.
perhaps it's the amp, as i'm using a ra-1 to power them.

however i have not been ever trying to purchase my cans based on budget, though I should. It would be intresting to see how close a cheaper can could compare with the high end cans, and at a large price difference?

currently for portable usage I use the mx500 and ksc-35, sometimes my v6, with my ta.

best of luck

Sigh.

I was making an example of how rated frequency response dosen'tmake something sound better as a response to your listing of the frequency response, which is 100% meaningless. Most any headphone can make sound over 20Khz, and lots of it, just not accurately. Ditto on the very deep bass.
