My laptop has been my source of audio for the past year and has done fine, but I want to move up to better quality. I currently just have a pair of DT770(80) and HD555, but I mostly just use the D770. I am just looking for a good solid CD player that will provide enough power to push both pairs of my current headphones, plus upper end headphones (such as HD600 or better). If possible I would like to be able to just have the CD player and not need an amp or anything if possible. It seems many times people have a CD or audio player, plus amp and other things, but I am not ready for all of that yet. I know I could just go buy some random CD player and it will work, but I would like to have something that will give me room to grow for the future.

If you are wondering what I listen to also, I choose between some rock, classical, and a bit of alternative. Also, my budget currently is not really a concern unless a suggestion of some 1,000 USD system is given.

Thanks.

How about the Marantz CD5001? They run about $300 street and I've heard one a couple of times. Not a long listen, but thought they were good. I went with the Marantz SA8001, which is a SACD player and runs $900. If you're interested in SACD, I would highly recommend it. Great deck.

The reason I think the CD5001 would be a good fit for you is that it has a nice built-in headphone amp. I believe that it is the same circuit used on the SA8001, which I do listen to here and there. It's a good amp, so you'd get that with your CDP in one package.

I've also got an original Rega Planet I like quite a bit. You can find those around $300, but that's for a used one and they don't have an internal amp.

You may want to check out an Eastern Electric Mini Max Tube CDP. They show up on Audigon often. A few sold recently on Audiogon. It's a nice cdp with a decent headphone out.

Thank you for the suggestions.
Another question I was wondering is would a DAC benefit me at all, using a CD player? I am a bit new to all the upper end equipment and everything so I do not want to look into things I would not need.

Though I am wondering, what is the order of common setups;
~Player -> DAC -> Amp -> Headphones
With proper cables throughout and such.
