How much better do the 80's sound over the Portas? I have heard the 80's, and the sound good (could not hear much if any difference between the 80's and 125's). The 80's are $200 Canadian, Portas $75. Are the Portas close to the 80's? I listen to rock, old country, jazz through a yamaha cd player an old receiver with a headphone out. Also would it be worth it to go up a couple of steps to a grado 325 or senn 580/600? They are around $450 Canadian. If I did step up would my player and amp be enough to power them? Thanks all for your opinions.

For the types of music you listen to i think the Grado 325s would probably keep you happy for a long time. The can be run of your soures, but like all headphones they would sound better with an upgraded source and amp. But for the price the SR-80s would probably make you very happy.

I agree with Satori, except I'd go with the SR325 if you can afford them. The musical presentation is much better than the SR80 and it will be a very long time before you have to worry about upgrading your headphones (assuming your musical taste doesn't change to classical). The SR325 will work with your current sound source. But they will really shine if you attached a dedicated amp later down the line. Now, to be fair to LTUCCI1924, the SR80 will meet your current needs. I don't know why he didn't like the SR325 as well, but once I tried them there was no going back for me. Oh, and just to confuse you I also have the HD600. I love their sound as well, but not as much as the Grado's for Rock. But, while not absolutely necessary, you really should consider a headphone amp for the HD600. At least you can start off with Grado and save up for an amp.

Well, I bought the Sr 80's. The Sr 325 was twice the price of the 80, but I still wonder if the 325 would have sounded twice as good. I didn't listen to the 325 though. Thanks to all. I'll post my impression of my new phones after some break in time and listening.

I gave a listen to my SR80 last night and, using the RA-1 amp, found them more transparent and dynamic than my SR225 and SR325. True, there's a wee bit more coloration in the upper midband, but I can "see through" them much better. I think the SR325 sound is "bigger" but not necessarily "better".

It seems that with the Grados, as you go up the line, you gain some sonic benefits but you also lose some of the clarity that was present in the cheaper models. I find the SR80 very balanced and the SR325 slightly bloated and dark.
