I am in the market for a second amp. Mainly an amp to drive my SA5000's. I have been considering tubes from SinglePower or a M^3. I also have Beyer DT 990 Pro's, and given there higher impedence, my SR-71 Isn't getting the job done, unless I turn the volume all the way up! What amps can drive higher ohm models like the Beyer? And maybe even be good with the 5K's.

Your SR-71 is set to have the gain of 6, this means when using phones like the one mentioned you need to turn the volume to 3 or 4 O'clock if you want loud music, but that does not mean that it is not capable to drive them, it simply means that the gain is set lower. If your SR-71 is set at gain of 11, then it will drive them with ease at 11-12 o'clock.

Man, either your source volume is weak, or you listen really really really really really loud.

I can barely go past 8 o'clock on my senns before my ears start hurting.

Yeah that's what I was thinking - how loud do you listen? I've never encountered an amp that I'd needed to turn up more than halfway even with 300ohm HD600's. If your source is a computer make sure the computer volume is maxed out to give the amp a strong line level.

Actually, I am using an X5L as my source. My MP3's are normalized by MP3gain to 92db. My music of choice is hard rock, so that may explain the need for high volumes!! But most of the time, I tone it down a bit, after the initial, first listen of the day.

I use 770's, and can confirm that ~3 o'clock is about right for LOUD volumes. Usually around 1-2 for me.

The stock SR-71 comes with gain of 6, it works very well with Grados. You do not need different gain at all.

Which 770's? The 600 ohm ones? The 80 or even 250 ohm versions shouldn't need that much volume. My 580's never get past about 10:00 and they're 300 ohms.

No, these are the 250 ohm versions, even says it right on the cans.

Ray,

Is the gain on your SR-71 amps fixed at 6 or can we "flick" an internal switch to vary it? I realize you can make whatever gain you want when you design and build it but I'm just wondering if it can be varied by the user as some other amps can be.

Thanks,
Greg
