Hey I am looking into getting a set of bookself speakers and an receiver to pair with them. Does anyone know of a good speaker/amp combo in my price range? I have looked at old marantz receivers on eBay, is this the kind of thing I want?

I think for a good stereo setup, the Cambridge Audio A300 V.2 integrated amp for $200.00 with free shipping (coupon code: FREESHIPPING) from Audio Advisor is hard to beat. For speakers, you can pair the Cambridge amp with the bookshelf Mirage FR-x3 for $150.00/pair and come in at under $400.00 total. On the other hand, if you can spend $50.00 over your limit of $400.00, you can subsitute the FR-x3 for the floorstanding Mirage FR-x5 at $250.00/pair, for a grand total of $450.00. Remember, the bookshelf speakers need stands.

Also check out J&R for great deals on refurbished Onkyo stereo receivers. Comes with 1 year Onkyo factory warranty, and for another $25.00, you can get 2 additional years of warranty from Onkyo directly.

That's a tough budget you got there. I'm wary of so called old school/vintage receivers. Especially from Pioneer and the like.
Anyway, I've found this set up that's under $400 at Saturday audio in their used equipment area.
NAD 7240 receiver, 40 watts $179
B & W DM550 bookshelf speakers $179 pr.

The 40 watts from the receiver sounds pretty good considering
their new line is spec'ed at 35, IIRC.

they also have a Rotel int amp/ tuner combo and they are warrantied. I have bought from them many times.

There are some good quality vintage setups that would meet your budget. An example would be what we did for our bedroom. A Yamaha CA-810 amp (if you need an integrated tuner, a Yamaha CR 6 or 8 series) plus ADS L470 speakers. Amp was $130 plus shipping, speakers $100 plus shipping. All in, w/ shipping, around $300.

Old NAD receiver or integrated such as the 7020 or 3020 with PSB Alpha speakers. The whole thing should come in under $300. That leaves you with $100 for a used tuner or interconnects.

That's a tight budget, but you might be able to find a NAD L-40 CD Receiver for around $300, and a pair of PSB Alphas (*great* match for NAD) for another $100 or so. Put the two together and you have a sweet system.

bundee...

the nad amp and psbs are great recommendations. but, why on earth would you tell him to spend over $150 on cables?

just buy some acoustic research interconnects from www.AC4L.com or parts express and 12g generic home depot or radioshack speaker wire.
