Hi Guy,

I have been on this forum for some time, and now i finally have some money to get some half decent stuff... Till now I have been using really crappy creative 2.1 series.

I mostly watch a lot of Movies and TV series from the computer plus a fair amount of music as well... What I am looking for in a speaker system is a deep and punchy bass with clear mids and crisp highs.... (I know I am asking for everything.)

First off my budget is 300-500$.

From all the reading I have been doing my best choice seems to be getting a pair of studio monitors and an additional sub. Not sure whether a dedicated soundcard would help at that range or I should just settle for the onboard audio... Also the thinking is if I can get the monitors now and then get a sub later when I save up a little more...

Any advice with regards to component selection would be greatly appreciated???

Definitely almost always better to buy your system in stages as you can save up more. Get the speakers now, and sub later :)

These would be my recommendations:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LSR305

Most people tend to find that the LSR305s compete well with any powered monitor in the ~$500 range. So given their current price, I'd say go with them unless you feel compelled for some reason to buy the airmotivs. That would get you closer to buying a sub.

Also, subs are big drivers, in big enclosures (costly to make and ship), with amps. So there is considerable benefit in not going real cheap. In other words, it would not be unreasonable to pair a $300 or $400 sub with those speakers.

Oh, and here's a JBL thread over at the AVS forum where they regularly discuss using them for home theater: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/89-speakers/1506519-jbl-lsr305-308-appreciation-thread.html

The JBL LSR350 option sounds decent... I need to find some place nearby which has them so I can go check it out....

Any other recomedations?

Also at this price point does it make sense to just use the onboard audio solution or should I invest in a sound card?

Since the bass in these speakers is not very great, And I do seem to be coming within my budget any recommendations on a massive active woofer in the 100-250$(at max) price range?

Guitar Centers carry the JBL LSR 305s.

This NXG sub is supposed to be an excellent sub in this budget range: http://www.amazon.com/NXG-Technology-NX-BAS-500-500-watt-Subwoofer/dp/B008FSTU4G/

Any other good woofer suggestions... 12 inch or higher at a cheaper price???

Try this thread over at AVS. Be sure to tell them what price you are looking for, how you intend to use it, etc. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/113-subwoofers-bass-transducers/1396482-budget-subwoofers-discussions-opinions-questions-thread.html
