Hey guys,

Looking for an active 2.0/2.1 system to interface with my HTPC. It has 3.5mm and Optical out as an option for sound. I'm looking to spend under 200 dollars. I like the idea of ditching a subwoofer and just buying 2 bassy speakers. I was looking into the Alesis M1 Active 520. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Why don't you start building a true HT setup instead? Get a Lepai t-amp and then passive speakers that can eventually lead toward a full 5.1 home audio setup with receiver?

See this review of the Lepai with some inexpensive Daytons: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-57439115-47/build-your-own-desktop-stereo-for-under-$70/

Speaker wire often doesn't come with amps; you typically have to buy your own.

And yes. That wire would work. However, it's not pure copper cable, but copper clad aluminum. This wire is 100% copper: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10239&cs_id=1023903&p_id=2749&seq=1&format=2

So the idea would be to clip off a small portion (half inch or so) of the clear cover, place and clamp that portion inside the red clamp on the speaker and the red clamp on the amp, and do the same for the black, correct?

Yep. Although easier to twist them after stripping the ends before trying to poke them in the connectors on the amp and speakers.
