Due to a recent bereavement I've been given a nice old sound system, and I wondered if you could suggest some decent speaker options based on what I have.

Linn Axis turntable
Arcam Alpha Plus CD player, tuner and amp.

I tried the turntable with my ACS T1 straight out of the amp's headphone jack (Depeche Mode's "A Broken Frame" was the only album to hand that wasn't Scottish Country Dance band music) and the sound blew my mind, I have to say. Almost 25 years old this gear, but it's sublime.

Just wondered if you could recommend some speaker options as I'm a novice. :)

Haha, I'm more or less in the same boat. Hopefully someone will come by with advice.

My stuff:

Sony PS-3300 / Kenwood 3070 (could use either)
semi-functional Tandberg 2055 receiver (R channel only, probably won't use)
NAD PP-2 preamp

On CL there are a pair of JBL Control 25's from a recording studio, asking $150. Any good?
Also available are pairs of JBL Control 1's, Control 5's, and D208's.

Salk SongTowers $2k
too much?
Polk LSi9 $500 and the sound goes into another league when you upgrade the crossovers too. When upgraded they sound excellent down to 40hz. Your eyes won't believe your ears lol. I have done it :)

I'm sorry, but I can't give a good recommendation in that price range as I don't have alot of experience in that area. You may be able to find something with a decent response down to 60hz, but I wouldn't expect more than that. An 8-10 inch subwoofer would be a fine addition to said system in the future when funds allow however.

The website AVforum & AVSforum are good websites to ask about speakers and other audio stuff.

I owned the Control ones iirc and they were just all mids, if I recall.  Some people might like them but I did not, I regret buying them.  Only did because I got a great price on them.

Hm. Know anything about the Polk Monitors? More people seem to have them over at AVS.

Usually they are a great buy when on sale.
Check the website Techbargins.
