So I currently using the optical output on my soundcard to an external DAC. Everyone tells me I need to do 100% volume output. Is there a reason for that?

Yes. Eliminating loss of audio data...
Not that it will always be bit-perfect with the volume set at 100$, but it will never be bit-perfect with the volume set at 99.99%

I guess this applies to USB out as well?

I was thinking of getting the Musiland 02US, but it doesn't have a volume knob. What then?

Maybe I should just fork out and get the audio-gd compass...

Three options:
1. Re-think and buy a different unit.
2. Use its RCA out to feed an amplifier with volume control.
3. Control volume at the transport level (computer or like).
