I have the Pure i-20 ipod dock and I feel the dac in it is pretty good so I was wondering if there was a way to use that as a regular dac for other sources ? the only input on the dock is the ipod 30pin connector. So one would need some kind of an adapter that converts from spdif to the apple 30 pin with the digital data going in the right format. Does such a thing exist ? or can it be built (diy) ?

I have the same tool, this is truly specific for Apple toys ! 
 
I guess you have no room to find out an adapter for that, the idea is that to make it compatible with Iphone a propietary communication interface has been implemented!
 
Anyhow if you dig into the forum you can see Ipad use either USB standard communication and let me use "apple" communication standard!
 
Since Ipad works perfectly you can challenge your wallet looking for a 30 cable -> female USB with the hope also the standard USB -> DAC communication has been implemented in regular way!
