source comparisons - mp3 and CD

If anyone is really serious about performing proper A/B testing, here is some info which may prove helpful:

http://www.pcabx.com/

I haven't tried the ABX software from this site myself yet, but I have prepared MP3s vs WAV files on CDR and compared them on a RioVolt MP3CD player and found which MP3 LAME encoding settings work best for my tastes. Only you can decide what you like and what, if any, differences you can hear for yourself.

What is the compression ratio of FLAC? I can't seem to find any straightforward explanation of this at Sourceforge.

Say I have an AIFF file that is 100 MB; what size will the resulting FLAC file then be?

I'd like to try a lossless encoder, but only if it provides a real space saving benefit.

RunsWithScissors,

Thanks for the Arny link, it always comes in handy. For psychoacoustic testing (esp. lossy compressors comparisons) ABC is considered a useful methodology as well (depending on what is being tested):

Please understand also that using a program that some engineer advertises as 'scientific' is no guarantee that your results are scientific. That's no reason not to experiment with the programs thought, just rember not draw too hasty conclusions even about your own hearing.

best regards,
Halcyon
